So many people have said this already: 4 different people look at the application. People from the same school may not have the same 4 people looking at them; therefore, if there were two separate groups of 4 people reviewing apps from the same school, it would explain the "randomness" of the admission. You don't have one standing committee!

I attend a small private school and I must admit that UCLA's admissions process is weird. However I have noticed a trend from the 70% students who get accepted. Which consist of very well rounded students who are in plays, student council, sports and have jobs at the same time! In the other hand the other 30% are involved in only one or two activities and very good grades. So that is the type of trend that I have seen at my school.

Although I think it was purely the grace of God that got me into UCLA,
my situation was very similar to what m989 and the person who posted a message about UCLA accepting those with a dedication to an extracurricular activity for an extended period of time said.

My stats:
3.9 GPA (only 6% accepted with under 4.0)
1320 SAT
710/610/640 SAT II
extracurrics: newspaper (6 years total)-editor in chief (12th) (news editor 11+10th) +middle school
asian american empowerment organization (2 yrs)
I combined a passion for writing with a deep interest in asian american awareness to write for local chinese newspaper (1 yr)
tennis-four years + captain
hospital candystriper -3years

I had an okay essay that emphasized my passion in school, the community, and life in general.

Getting into UCLA was not even a thought.
I think something miraculous happened. And I do believe someone is watching over me!

Skybaker I too think that it was a miracle that I got in. Never in my life would I have thought that UCLA would accept me!

(sorry made an error) Skybaker I also think that it was a miracle that I got in. Never in my life would I have thought that UCLA would accept me!

it was an even bigger miracle that i got accepted...the average applicant has higher stats than i do, yet they accepted me.

Accepted, invited to the honors thing.

White, female, bay area.
3.8 uw (maybe even less!), 4.1 w
1410
770 iic/760 writing/750 chem
- normal extras, nothing spectacular or particularly interesting (newspaper, officer of community service club, tutoring, music, leadership, etc)
- essays were normal

To people that are confused or angry about their rejection: don't pull the "overqualified" ********. It just doesn't make sense (at least to me). There's no way to know why you weren't chosen. It could be something really silly like none of the readers had a good breakfast... or maybe the weather was bad... or a few got indigestion.

honors program require 700 math and 700 verbal on sat 1

Haha, it was a miracle I got in.

Asian male, San Diego...
3.7 weighted, ~3.4 unweighted? (maybe less x_x)
ACT: 33
SAT I: 1370
780 IIC, 740 writing, 610 US history
About 80 hours community service (I started second semester in 11th grade), track & field (not varsity).
I think my essay was okay, but I'm sure many other people wrote better ones.

I still don't see how I got in. o_O

^^ wow. i was rejected even tho i qualified for the honors thing easy (ranked 4/474, 1400 sat, 4.72 GPA). I think that ucla looks too hard at the sat II math. everyone above seemed to break 700 or so on the math test (i didnt, 680)

^^i see now. this is only for the college of L&S. its different for the different schools

This whole thread is funny. People are saying that UCLA admissions is "whack" or "unfair" because they didn't get in. Oh boo f'in hoo, babies. Welcome to the real world, where you get told NO once in a while.

Jeez, sorry to be so harsh, but COME ON. You think I cried and told everyone life sucks when I got turned down for jobs? HELL NO, I just tried harder the next time.

I thought this thread had finally died. What nerve for it to come back to life.

P.S. Cal2009, I had a 620 for math 1c. Timed math test=not my friend. 2c was much worse.

Would you like some cheese with your aged whine?

Cal, I got a worse SATII Math score (Both IC and IIC) and I got in. I don't think it's SATII Math.
