Wharton Chances for Two Friends

I have two friends who are applying RD to Wharton this year. I don’t think either stands a shot but please give your opinion. They would appreciate it. And no, neither of these people are me. The location is Michigan. Both are low income.

Friend 1:

Russian Male
GPA: 4.0 UW
Rank: 1st Decile (all school provides)
ACT: 32 (I don’t know his subject tests but I’m assuming 700+)

EC:
Varsity Soccer - 11, 12 (Captain Senior Year)
JV Soccer - 9, 10
Karate (Black Belt)
DECA - 9-12 (Quiz Bowl National Champion in 11th Grade)
NHS- 11, 12
Those are the major ones that I can think of…

Friend 2:

Russian Female
GPA: 4.0 UW
Rank: 1st Decile (all school provides)
ACT: 32
SAT: 2170
SAT II: 740 Chemistry 730 Math IIC

EC:
Debate - 9-12 (State Qualifier), attends Debate Camp every summer
Forensics - 9-12 (7th Place State)
Works 18 hrs/week at two jobs
Model United Nations (Executive Board)
NHS - 11, 12

DECA national champ will HELP A LOT! I won DECA state champion...but not at nationals :(

I applied ED and was deferred with 1940 SAT, 3.9 GPA UW and 4.7 W

considering the competition this year, I'd say neither will get in

Uhh... how can you tell from only these stats...

bump......

Both have a great chance. Essays and recs are the tipping point, I suppose (esp. the "Why Penn" essay).

Judging from most of the people on this board who claimed they got accepted with lower stats, I'd guess that your friends both have a great chance of getting accepted. It sort of depends on how good the adcom is feeling when he reads the app.
