Wharton Chances? Please help me and I'll Chance Back!!

Hello Everyone!

Rising Senior here, and I am starting applications.

I already have a list of "safety schools" that I am almost 100% sure I can get in to. I am trying to figure out some good "reach" schools. I would love to go to Penn, but I don't think I can get it. I need some advice!

Here are my current stats:

GPA: 3.98 (One B+ freshman year)

ACT: 31, with a 10 on writing. This was my second attempt. I plan on taking the ACT 1-2 more times. I have not done any tutoring for it, and I am about to start a one on one ACT prep class focusing on math and science. (my subscores are 35 reading, 32 English, 29 Math, and 27 science). I think that with this tutoring, I will be able to raise my score to at least a 33/34.

SAT 2: 600 Chemistry, 700 US History..... Should I take more? I know that the Chem is kinda low....

Extracurriculars:
Volunteering/Shadowing at a local hospital (approximately 50 Hours) - 10,11,12
Started a charitable website(check it out: http://h2oworldwide.org/) - 12
Baseball team captain (varsity player since 7th grade-- I go to a small school) - 12
Kids to Kids facilitator (A mentoring program within my school) - 11,12
School Honor Council member for 11th and 12th grade
Senior Class Vice President - 12

AP Scores: 5 AP US History, 5 AP English Language and Composition, 4 AP Chemistry

Please give me some feedback! Even if it is probably not what I want to hear, I need to hear it now! If there is anything else I left out, or that anyone wants to know please let me know!

Also, if this is nearly impossible for me to get in to... Can you all let me know how I can better my chances?

Thanks in advance!

Forgot to list:
I’m in a huge variety of clubs. I didn’t know if I was supposed to list things like that. I’m in clubs like Math Club, Spanish Club, National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Spanish Club, and this year I am co-founding an economics club.

It’s a rejection because you have minimal business related EC’s and your quantitative analysis skills are too low (600 chem, 29 math, 27 science). You seem more humanities oriented.

Thanks for the feedback Oberyn!

What is your race? In college admissions, race plays a huge role that many people often overlook.

Student970, I’m Caucasian.

I wouldn’t submit the Chem SAT because it will only raise a red flag. If you’re able to, retake the chem sat in October or take a different subject test that’ll better showcase your strong points. Also in your application make sure you majorly stress your ECs and what makes you unique from other applicants

Chance me back if you can :D

paperairplane - Thank, I was thinking of retaking Chem, and maybe taking math 1/2. I will try and stress the fact that my family is from South Dakota, as I think that makes me seem a little more “unique” as many of these top schools don’t have a ton of kids of that area.

paperairplane - link me!

Grades are very nice, but the standardized test scores are going to kill you. Being an unhooked caucasian will make it very difficult for you to stand out.

As others have said, you need to make a clear link between the ECs you’ve done (esp charitable ones) and the interest at Wharton.

sgopal2 - Thanks for the feedback!! So, in your opinion, if when I take the ACT in September, if i get a 32/33 should I look to take it again in October as a last ditch effort? I will try and make that link clear. Thanks again for the great feedback.

Regarding Wharton-grade ECs, how “good” do they have to be? Do they have to be on the level of attaining an internship at Merrill Lynch or other major financial institutions?

@LazyBonez‌

I think that Penn prefers it when Wharton applicants have taken math II, and scored highly- I remember seeing something like that on the website once.

I do know that they definitely want evidence of mathematical proficiency, and I think that they’re specifically interested in calculus. Check the website- these are all things I vaguely remember reading 4 months ago.

Take math II, study hard for it.

@Bemusedfyz I just looked at their website and you’re right! It says Wharton strongly suggests math 2 subject test.

There we go. Get going

Don’t rely on the act tutoring–I did one of those to increase my 33 on the act and it led me to the same score. However your GPA is good and definitely helps. For the subject tests I recommend taking math level 2 especially if you’re applying to Wharton! Math is of primary concern when it comes to business. Also see if you can take some AP math classes? Good luck though!
Chance me back! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/washington-university-st-louis/1675956-chance-me-wash-u.html#latest

Honestly: Wharton is very hard to get into. I am not sure your EC’s really HELP you. If you were committed to them and were very passionate, they would significantly raise your chances. Now, ACT wise, you might want to raise it to a 32 or above. Your essay would have to be cream of the crop. The website is very unique though  I like it

@Tfiosnerd‌ This year I’m going to be taking AP Calc BC, AP Physics, AP Spanish, AP English (Literature) and AP US Gov. Do you think that it would be worth it to try and independently study for the AP Microeconomics exam?

@LetterPurple‌ Thanks for the feedback and compliment on the website. haha I know it’s not beautiful, but I’m working on it. I hope to raise my ACT to at least a 32 with this tutoring I’m about to begin.
