Wharton difficulty

I'm being recruited for lacrosse at Penn. I am concerned about the difficulty of courses at wharton. I have a 3.8 gpa and a 28 ACT. Would I do well?

Thanks!

You probably won’t be in Wharton, you’ll be in CAS… and yeah it’s tough…

Lax for life bruhhhh, hit me up we’ll down some Nattys together

I agree with enlightenedespot. Chances are you won’t be accepted into Wharton, but being an athlete does make up for the ACT score, or at least I think that’s how admissions will take it.

But if I do get in, will it be very difficult, or similar to other top business schools?

^ It’s going to be a lot tougher.

Chances are, even as an athlete, you won’t get into Wharton. I personally knew a girl in a similar situation as yours for track, and she didn’t get into Wharton but did get into CAS. If you do though, your ACT and GPA are certainly subpar, and you will be surrounded by people who did a lot better. This doesn’t indicate if you’ll manage to thrive in classes like Management 100 completely because a lot depends on if you were just being lazy, if you’re actually passionate, etc.

28 is about 25th percentile at Penn. I imagine 28 would be 10th percentile at Wharton. Your GPA is good though. Are you taking rigorous classes?

Um, not to be mean, but if your GPA is weighted, that is a bit low—look at the ED/RD acceptee-s for the past few years. I’m sure you are a lacrosse god/goddess, but again, I’m just trying to be honest.

If that GPA is unweighted, then that’s pretty darn good (and I would’ve used the actual word if I could’ve on this forum), especially in combination with your lacrosse prowess.

What would you consider doing well? It’s very rare for recruited athletes to get a high GPA at any school considering how much extra effort you have to devote to your sport. However, you do get some credit for that when it comes to job recruiting and such.

Also, I think you could do well in MGMT, Marketing and other less quantitative classes (where there is less studying/memorization involved) to make up for any low grades in core finance/accounting classes.

If you are a recruited athlete who ranks high on their list, yes, there is a possibility that you will get Wharton. I’ve seen several basketball, football players admitted to Wharton. However, that doesn’t mean anything if you can’t do well there. When applying for jobs, most recruiting companies want to know your GPA at On Campus Recruiting. In addition, most Wharton courses are graded on a curve so you can make your own conclusions.

Good luck in the process.

My honest advice is that with your stats you will struggle at Wharton even if you get in. This is not about you - it’s about the “curve”.

If you are intent on Penn, consider the CAS.

Also, consider Georgetown or UVA. Both great schools with great business programs and decent/great lax and less (but still meaningful) curve pressure.

PM me if you want more.

I doubt you will get into Wharton like everyone else said. And to a poster above, I see a 28ACT as the 1 percentile at Wharton…only 500 or so kids get into it each year.
