Wharton Econ vs. CAS Econ

Everyone in Wharton receives a degree in economics. How does this econ differ from the econ dpt. in CAS? Basic classes such as micro/macro, I would imagine, are taken by Whartonites and CAS students together (at Wharton?)... so what's the diff? The nat'l rankings for econ dpts...are talking about CAS, right? Not Wharton? I was thinking double major in econ and ir and dual degree with wharton, but if it's econ in wharton too, then I wouldn't do the econ major in CAS, just IR...right?

you get a B.S. in Economics from Wharton, but it’s undergraduate business degree.

Economics is not offered through Wharton.

This has been answered a lot of times on the board.

The difference is that Wharton is business (you can call it “applied economics” if you wish), while CAS is “real” economics (you can call it “theoretical” if you wish). Don’t think you are studying economics at Wharton because it has the word “economics” in the degree. Wharton is a business school. What this means is that after basic micro/macro, at Wharton you’ll take classes in finance, accounting, management, and any concentration you choose. At CAS, you will take more specialized courses in economics, such as game theory, econometrics, industrial organization, labor economics, international trade, etc. Economics at CAS is about making models for understanding the economy. Wharton is about, well, business.

You are correct that basic micro/macro classes are taken by both. Wharton students can either take Econ1/2 or Econ10. I think all CAS students take Econ1/2.

You are correct that the national rankings for econ departments are for CAS (and the rank has been top 10 for a while).

A double major in econ+IR with a dual degree with Wharton, although probably not easy, makes sense, so you should not drop econ because it is the same econ as in Wharton, although you would probably have some overlap that could be beneficial if you double-count some classes.

Wow. Thanks for all the advice…very helpful!
