Wharton or Texas.....

Wharton is a great school, and I really enjoyed visiting Penn, but is it worth applying early if i can get into UT business honors with a scholarship? I guess what I'm trying to say is I know Wharton is a better school with much higher prestige, but would anyone recommend waiting until RD to see what other scholarships I could get from other schools (Mainly UT)?

If you’re not sure that you want to apply to Wharton do not apply Early Decision. Penn’s ED is binding. That means if you get in you must go - you sign a contract.

So just apply RD and see what kind of financial aid you get.

We can’t tell you how much your financial situation benefits from scholarships, but there is a significant advantage going to Wharton over Texas. Recruiting, curriculum, prestige, competitiveness all are advantages. Texas is a good business program but 2nd tier among undergrad business vs Wharton, Berkeley, Michigan.

Your financial situation matters a lot in this decision. If you have a low enough income, then your package from Penn will probably be as good as the one from Texas. If you are extremely wealthy then who cares about Penn’s tuition. You are probably in between. In which case apply RD and see what choices you have next spring. A full ride at Texas next spring might like better to you than 200k tuition at Wharton.

A Wharton degree does not lead you down a path to poverty. So even if you have to pay full freight, it is worth it. Its benefits will last throughout your working career and saves you the cost of an MBA.

Thanx everyone. You’re right philly guy I’m pretty much in the middle as far as income. I’ve just got to decide whether I would take Wharton over Texas with a full ride. By the way, I love Wharton and Penn Biochem, so I don’t really have a problem doing ED, its just the money issue, and whether or not the 200k will pay off in the future. As of right now, I think it would and hopefully will be applying as soon as they get their supplement out haha

Thanx cbreeze that helps with the money issue

The UT Austin BHP is very good. And it’s very selective, too. They only accept like 150ish students each year.

I know BHP is a great program also, and I would be more than happy going there. Being in-state will definently help a bunch though with getting in, thankfully. It’s a tough choice whether or not to apply early to Wharton, and I’m hopeful that I can get into either program. Another question, does anyone know whether or not a Wharton graduate who is not so high in the class will still get recruited?

Well, if you rank about top 2 or 3 % in your high school, you could use the BHP as backup and apply ED to Wharton. After Wharton is the Mecca for business majoring students.

Yeah, as of right now I’m number 1 out of my school, but I know that still doesn’t guarentee BHP because my sis was 5 out of 650 and didn’t get in. The thing is I get my first year free at Texas if i end up staying number 1, and I won’t find out until after ED Wharton. I’m pretty sure I would take Wharton over paying three years at BHP though. Anyone know about the question about being recruited at the bottom of Wharton? Anything helps. Thanx
