Wharton Reject, Chances at Other Schools?

reposting from upenn boards..

I recently got rejected from Wharton, my dream school for the past 7+ years and it hurts badly. I'm thinking I'll post my profile because I kind of thought I had a good shot, and want to see where I was weak and what my chances for other schools are. Here it is:

Middle Eastern Male from East Long Island...

Stats:
SAT 1: 800 V/780 M/710 W = 2290 Total
SAT 2: 740 American/720 World/690 Math 1c (Don't know what happened)/680 Chemistry.
-No ACT.

Top 10% in Class.

AP's/IB/College Course: 5's on American/ European/Politics, 4 on Chemistry, 6 on Math SL, A- from Syracuse University in WRT105 and ETS143.

Course Load:
-Most rigorous course load available. I also was accelerated a year in advance so I came into 9th grade taking 10H English or Chem Honors, instead of standard 9H English or Biology Honors.
-I am in the Academy of Finance program within my school, take about 2 college level business courses through local SUNY schools a year.
-I opted to follow a passion for the Arts and take an Introductory Art class freshman year, and follow through on 3 years of Sculpture in the best Sculpture program offered in NY state.
-Taking BC Calc, AP English, AP Physics B, 5IB Spanish this year (mainly because there aren't many other AP Classes for me to take).
-Pursued Japanese one year and study it independently with a tutor now.

Rec's/Essays:
-My teacher recommendations were from my Business/History/Sculpture teachers, all stellar and very specific.
-I interned directly under the President of a multi-billion company, he wrote a great rec too.
-My autobiography essay dealt with myself in the future, in regards to my desire to work for the IMF/World Bank. Also I've actually traveled to every continent, except Antarctica, on my own, so when I write about poverty I've seen and how it affected me, I would hope it wouldn't come out as standard ********/show that I had the desire to go to these places on my own. My "Why Penn?" essay dealt with my desire to go into the BPUB concentration and gave a lot of first-person detail, which I thought was looked highly upon. Also had essays proof-read by an English professor friend.

E.C.'s
-Vice President of DECA Business Club
-Business Honor Society
-Art Honor Society (only sophomore to be inducted).
-National Honor Society (chaired project to paint mural at local Diabetes research center).
-Varsity Winter/Spring track for all 4 years with several county titles and state qualifiers under my belt. Cross Country as well, but only to get into shape...I suck at distance running If I was slightly better, I'd have tried to get recruited, blah.
-Over 1,000 hours spent volunteering at local Diabetes research center.
-One summer volunteered for Audubon Society, another summer went to NSLC International Diplomacy camp.
-Travel Soccer - Division 2 for basically my entire grade school life.
^^I don't really list my awards for the activities but I won at least 1 award in each club/activity I was involved in. Don't feel like listing them particularly, but rest assured =P.

And my mommy went there too to boot! And I'm fluent in Turkish/Spanish. (Spanish classes were just a formality.)

The two weaknesses I can spot for myself are the fact that I'm not Valedictorian and my less than stellar proficiency in Math/Science over the years. However, I specified that I wanted to do BPUB which isn't really like a hardcore Actuaries/Statistics based concentration, more similar to the PPE major offered at UPenn. Speaking of which, I'm wishing I had applied to UPenn and done PPE then transferred to BPUB in Wharton since UPenn is easier to get into...

What are my chances at these following schools?
Columbia - I love their Economics Department, loved it before their new round of hirings, love it even more now, Econ/Poli Sci. looks great.
Harvard
Yale
Princeton - I would love to go Econ Undergrad and then Woodrow Wilson School.
Dartmouth - Business school! <3 <3.
Cornell - Economics/Government major.
MIT - Sloan and Econ Dept. <3 <3.
UChicago - One of the best Economics departments.
Georgetown - Business school! International economics.
Northwestern
NYU - Good business undergrad program
WashU@St. Louis
GWU Honors Program
Case Western

I will also probably be pursuing Athletic recruitment for D3 schools I guess...Thanks for looking at my rather long winded post! And I'm a workaholic, so the # of schools isn't a big issue to me. Rather set financially too, so don't need aid.

artık yalnız degilim :P

y tambien hablo el espanol (vivo en tejas; lo necesito para trabajar).

tandem inquires latinam? sed en ceteris excelsior quam meam est. miseram sum quod tandem discere Nipon volo. :P

Anyway, sorry to hear about your rejection. With a powerhouse resume like that I'm sure you'll get into any one of those other schools. Don't take it personally, there's an element of crapshoot to the game.

I applied ED to Wash U with much worse numbers than yours and got deferred; Their B school is far less prestigious than others on your list, but still quite good. Goldman Sachs regularly recruits there. I'm sure you'll be successful no matter where you go.

merhaba arkadas (damn this non-Euro keyboard). Don't know Latin :( I assume "tandem inquires latinam" = same-time know latin = Do you also know Latin?

I can see you have a mind for foreign languages too. The similarties are creepy! :)

"Do you also know Latin? Though in all else, you are higher me. I'm also jealous because I want to learn Japanese too."

I could never do Japanese though. I tried Chinese once; the words didn't stick.

But yeah, like I said above you're numbers are way better than mine. I'm first-gen here in the States and I've made a lot of mistakes in high school. Like overloading myself senior year (7 APs, what was I thinking!?).

Were you born here?

I was born in Princeton. My parents were college immigrants. You may know Efes Pilsener beer? That's my family...I wish I were living in Turkey or Europe right now, then I could be a Developmental Admit in a flash. blah.

Efes Pilsener? Holy crap. You must be rich haha. Everyone in the middle east knows what Efes Pilsen is.

My dad was a college immigrant as well. He was one of a dozen people on the team that invented the wireless packet-swapping technology that made cell phones and wireless internet connections possible. :D

And for his multibillion dollar research, Bell Labs only gave him a dollar. And it's in a plaque too, so it's not like we can even spend it. =)

Anyway, it's not like college matters much for you. You have the connections, and that's what matters most in the business world. I wouldn't sweat it so much and just have fun in college; you'll definately get into one of those top schools.

My dad did/does telecommunicatios R&D too hahaha. He's the head of the IEEE Telecommunications sub-group. But back onto topic, I think I really need help with my essays. I wrote my Wharton essays kind of dry, because hell, I'm applying to a business school. But if I should put a degree of irreverence and comedy into them, how am I supposed to do that without going overboard?

Also, I lack any connections in the business world of America. Soooo it's really a moot point.

Holy crap! We're like twins! Except you're the smart one! =)

My dad was the Chair of IEEE CNOM and Co-Founder of TCII. Maybe our dads know eachother.

*Edit: Though my dad quit when Telecom crashed. He became a full-time professor for two years, but now since Marconi shut down in Texas he went and joined up a start-up VOIP company. As soon as my brother and I leave for college, he's getting the hell out of Texas haha.

wow. small world lol.

So move! In forty years, America will produce nothing but doctors, lawyers, and service industries. You can quote me on that. ;)

If I had taken anything resembling European style academics/college exams, or even the IB program, I would have applied to London School of Economics in a hearbeat.

I think the GPA, lack of amazing ECs (good but not spectacular) were your issues, frankly I am surprised you were flat out rejected especially with the legacy.

Harvard - tough but MIGHT happen 20%
Yale - Same
Princeton - Same
Dartmouth - 55%
Cornell - 65%
MIT - Will be easier for you than HYP, 30%
UChicago - 75%
Georgetown - 75%
Northwestern - 70%
NYU - (Stern) 80%
WashU@St. Louis - 80%
GWU Honors Program - 90%
Case Western - 100%

hs, Did you submit an arts portfolio of your sculpture? If not, it's a bit late to pull it together, but, to me, your art involvement is a really strong point of differentiation. You don't get many kids interested in a combination of art and business. Second idea is that if you are by chance Islamic, be sure to emphasis that in your application as well.

I don't know enough about Wharton to comment on why they didn't accept you, but I think you'll find a winner in one of the schools on your list. I'd also suggest that you consider adding Amherst or Williams. Many of their grads get into top biz schools and they would appreciate your ethnic diversity more than the larger schools do.

Well, I'm not religious. But I guess I can be a born again Muslim from now until April. Do colleges really care about their religious diversity that much to make it a strong selling point?

Also no, I didn't submit an arts portfolio. I was going to consider it but I was told time and time again that sending too much to the admissions office can be more detrimental than positive. I'm not majoring in art or anything so I don't know...

I agree with Williams or Amherst - great business feeders.

timur, take the sat II's again in math (try IIC). I hear MIT is big on those and they may not like your 690 on the 1c.

fine brett!!!!

Holy crap, my brother is named Timur as well!! :D

*Edit: I'm Hakan, by the way.
