For those who are at Penn or graduated from Penn:

How are the wharton students like? Is it a really cutthroat environment where everybody is really uptight? I'm trying to decide what to do early, Stanford or Wharton. Does anybody have any opinions on the two? I feel like Stanford would be really chill and laid back which I'd love, but I'm not sure how Wharton is.

wharton isn’t stanford. if you can’t deal with the heat, get out of the kitchen. we got chill but it won’t happen in the wharton school; you’d have to go to college events to find those people. there are a few chill people in wharton, don’t get me wrong, but it’s pretty uptight by and large.

necro, dude relax I have only been here since school started but I have found looaddddss of really cool people that like to hang out, party and chill. Of course, everyone works their asses off but most of them have a very satisfying social life.

i graduated from wharton ug in 2008…i would say that by in large the atmosphere is not as competitive as most people thing. Are there people that are really cutthroat? yes…but is it the majority? absolutely not.

I would say that from a classroom perspective most people are relatively laid back…not that intense. The only time you see people being competitive is when it comes to landing jobs but by in large the atmosphere is pretty normal compared to most other top 10-15 schools…

you will find competitive people at any top school (all top schools are filled with high achievers)…wharton may be a bit more intense in that people are worried about landing ibanking, etc. jobs earlier (ie. like freshman and soph year) but overall its nothing that should deter you.

I mean, Necro has a point.
Poste, I know you’re a freshman, so you haven’t finished Management yet, but the class is graded on a bell curve: AND STUDENTS GRADE EACH OTHER.

hahaha its funny that you mention this because on the first day of class they clarified that students DO NOT grade each other. It is solely based on your work, participation in lectures and the evaluation OF YOUR TA, who grades you in comparison to your peers. Students are only asked to answer questions regarding the strengths and weaknesses of their peers in order to give them feedback and help them improve.

Thats actually what my TA said too. I was relieved for a little while and then found out they were just lying to us. We do grade each other at the end by giving each other one of the following “grades”: Average, Fair, Good, Excellent, Superb
