What a black guy who benefited from affirmative action thinks about AA

[QUOTE=Boo! I suck]
I think there are better things we could be wasting our time *****ing about. Like the high price of celery.

You should see the price of toenail clippers. Sky rocketing!

^^anorexic_abe, wow…
I do hope you are kidding.

I ramble too much. Here’s the synopsis:

Stop feeling guilty about being accepted. AA may have its problems, but ultimately Yale is a private school that wants a diverse student body, and AA is an attempt to accomplish this, whether or not it’s effective.

And PS, the ignorant replies are obnoxious and unneccessary. If you have nothing better to do with your time than deride someone who’s trying to make an honest statement about Affirmative Action, then your lives are pretty pathetic.

"No, AA critics would be placated if they weren’t convinced they (the critics) were getting the shaft. It all comes down to ‘what’s good for me’ "

Ok, let’s take a quick poll here. Who here dislikes the current form of AA, but could at least understand it and support it if it were shown to be effective at moving the society to a place where race wouldn’t have to be used?

I, for one, strongly dislike AA (even though my kids will qualify for it), But I’d feel a whole lot better if it were shown to be making progress towards a goal. Anybody else?

Summary of what I wrote: Colleges don’t do AA to be fair, they do it to look diverse.

It’s funny what people say, we legit do have an AA thread every other week.

Yeah, I’m uh bored. I just don’t really wanna care now- okay. "
I got into YALe but it was b/c of AA- i only had a 0 SAT and a 0 GPA"
Well good for you.
Guess what - i think we should start a thread about the price of apple juice b/c I don’t have any more.
This would be a more useful topic than debating a government policy that isn’t going to change.

Millancad, the “goal” of AA keeps shifting depending on which bleeding heart is trying to justify it when. That’s what you get when nobody knows what the goal IS. In my lifetime the supposed reason behind AA has been to repay past wrongs, even the playing field, ensure equal representation, satisfy imprecise diversity requirements, move towards a society in which race isn’t used in determining outcomes, etc. And the latest is the one you mention above: to provide white country club kids and their elite universities a politically correct smokescreen so nobody can see how socially exclusive their schools are.

Why do I question the sincerity of the OP? Hmm…

How about instead of helping blacks/Hispanics/etc., we screw over the WASPs?

No need to question OP’s legitimacy… he’s legit.

As for the discussion, although I’m sure most people who got into top schools did it sincerely and didn’t even need AA, there are still quite of few who get in with strong help from AA.

What Millancad said.

Arachnophobia, I like your thinking…

How I despise these threads.

You suck (coming from someone who would also benefit from AA, so no, I’m not bitter. Or maybe I am?). Go eat a hamburger.

Last unprotected race and gender here, so I have an uphill battle to get into my dream school, Notre Dame.

…and I like the challenge.

Hope it works out for you, Coollege. I just hope you don’t end up “across the street.”

well I appreciate all comments to my post, I’m glad people are weighing in. But I find it funny that some have posted that I am gloating. How am I gloating? Im the first one to say that i have nothing to gloat about…so please explain why you feel that way! I said it was easy for me to get into schools not because I wanted to gloat, I said it because it was true for some reason .Secondly, someone wrote questioning why I would go to a school that i didnt feel I was accepted to fairly. well thats just silly as well. I said in the OP that it was my top choice so no kidding im gonna go. I just explained how I had no idea WHY I got in…until I came to the conclusion that it was largely due to race. And for the last time, this has nothing to do with self belief. I never wrote that I wont do well at Yale or that I couldnt. All i said was that when I have peers with higher SATs, better GPA’s, and more extra curricular work than I ever considered, yet I was accepted over them its pretty clear why and thats not fair.

wow. Why are you mad??? I’m not gloating lol. I’m telling the truth. It was very easy for me to get into schools. its a fact. I’m not sayign its because im so special. Its pretty much because of my ethnicity. And why would I give up my spot to my first choice school? oh god chill out man

Oh wow I knew there would be some of “those people” but really? There are like 5 post complaining about threads on the AA topic. DONT BOTHER POSTING IF YOU FEEL THAT WAY damn.

Wow, I think this is a very interesting view of AA. I appreciate your opinion. Don’t feel guilty about your acceptance. Just appreciate it, which you already seem to. Look ahead to the future at an amazing school. Best of luck at Yale.
