What a black guy who benefited from affirmative action thinks about AA

Oh, let him go. We’ll never catch him. Not in these shoes.

I didn’t take my sneakers off, I’m still Sneakers O’Toole.

Why would you go to Yale if you think you didn’t deserve it? Subconsciously you must have had a reason to make such a big decision.

I think AA is bull so in protests, I used my perfectly AA-y Mexican/Native American heritage and put in a big, fat, “I PREFER NOT TO SAY” (or something like it). It may or may not have helped if they looked at my surname or my awards, but I tried. I feel a little better about getting into (and not getting into) colleges when decision time came around because I knew I tried to make it by merit.

I heard a very good argument for AA once but I forgot what it entailed, so without any supporting argument I’ve retracted back to racial AA-is-bull territory with a liking for income-based preference.

“Why would you go to Yale if you think you didn’t deserve it? Subconsciously you must have had a reason to make such a big decision”

Well I knew that my URM status got me in over more qualified non URM candidates but dont get me wrong, im still a good student. I tried my best and even though I didnt do as well or as much I still worked hard. Of course im going to accept a spot at a school that i like alot, even if I know factors other than merit allowed me to get in.

nice job supereagle, yale is a great school. yes, you might be technically a URM, but you still deserved it! i am hispanic, so even tho i am considered a urm, i still worked my butt off in high school. i really do hope i get into a good school because my older brother dropped out a few years ago (out of high school i mean), so my family is really hoping i will be the first-gen college bound student. my dream school is carnegie mellon,i want to major in computer science or mechanical engineering.

supereagle - Stats plz? :p

I disagree with the OP in this thread. After reading 166 posts- I realized that he worked to get into college but I dislike the way je said that getting in was easy for him. Despite the fact that he feels its true b/c saying so sounds pretty arrogant. Despite his feelings, he needs to find a tactful way to ex[ress himself. ANd I join with ansar in asking
"stats please ? "

I’m sad that I’m only white :frowning:
I don’t get to benefit…

salve dont be sad!!! Im sure you’ll end up at a great place and it really doesnt make that big of a difference anyway.

for those who want my stats:
GPA 4.13
SAT 1980
ACT 29
SATII- Lit 740 US his 660 Math I 660

THANKS supereagle! I’m hoping I’ll do fine!

I couldn’t read through the whole thread, but I read the first page, and from what I’ve read, it seems like a lot of people are giving the OP crap for no reason. I mean, cut the guy some slack… Sure, he benefited from the system, but he’s admitting it and at least he doesn’t have an ego problem. That being said, I think the OP is probably very special in some way, which allowed him to get into the schools he wants, so congrats to him. Just because he acknowledges some flaw in the system that may or may not have helped him, it doesn’t mean he has to hurt himself. I mean, if you were born into a certain family that had a steady enough income to put food on the table, but there are kids out there starving (and they may be great kids too), you don’t have to starve yourself too. Sorry if you guys aren’t talking about this anymore. Lol, reading 12 pages seems kinda much
