Me and this other guy from my school applied ED to Penn.
I applied to CAS, had a better rank than him, had more aps, had significantly higher test scores than him, had better ec's than him, was a frickin international athlete.

He applied to Wharton. Yet, he got in ahead of me.

Why? The only plausible reason could be that I applied for financial aid.

But according to Penn's policy, they are need-blind for Canadians. I highly doubt that.

I really don’t think you got rejected for applying for financial aid. It could easily be something you said in your essays that the adcom didn’t like, or that there were too many people who were similar to you and they just couldn’t choose, or any small, dumb, insignifcant reason. Don’t be discouraged, a lot of people who are rejected in the early round end up attending fabulous schools. I just read some extremely inspirational and uplifting stories. Check out this link:

and I even know this kind of story in my own life. I’m really sorry about what happened, but unfortunately, this kind of thing does happen to a number of people. Don’t be so sad, there’s always the RD round!

It’s not arbitrary, just incredibly subjective. Seriously, take it from someone who knows: Don’t indulge these questions! They have no answers and are just going to irritate you. (Also, you can’t control whom they accept, just how you react, so screw Wharton and just focus on the next step.) Blow off some steam and then kick it into gear for RD.
