What a waste of time

D got a Kodak award ($7K/year) from UR in high school. We went RU twice and like it very much. We put UR on the top of the list of schools D applied, even before Cornell and Penn. We believed that the Award will reduce the work study or loans in the fin aid package. In the end, UR has the worst fin aid. It has more work study, more summer earning requirements, more loans than all the 12 schools she applied. You can not deny that UR did a very good job on marketing itself, but What a waste of time for both the school and the applicants.

i recieved 25,225 per semester… s 50,450 for this upcoming year in aid

Rochester National Grant 16,700
Federal Academic Competitieness Grant 375
Federal Pell Grant 2,650
Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grant 500
Federal Work Study Eligibility 1,250
Loans (Federal Direct Subsizied/Unsubsidized, Perkins Loan) 3,750

I have to disagree with your statement that UR has the worst financial aid…

Do you even know how much finaid was offered yet?

Yeah, I don’t agree that UR has the worst financial aid. Everyone gets screwed sometimes, but my college counselor urged me to apply several months back because of their generous and helpful financial aid. They’re known for it.

I dunno, MOST of my finaid was loans and I’m still expected to pay $32000 a year. My parents can’t do that so we’re trying to appeal it. (Dad’s a freelance musician, Mom’s at grad school.)

I’m on my way to turning down Wesleyan and Cornell for Rochester, I got 10,000/yr for the Xerox Award. I plan on majoring in Neuroscience and Rochester has a great program for that. So I know that Rochester will be a great place to be, a better atmosphere to succeed at compared to a place like Cornell. I think your D made a good choice!

rix - hey my dad is a freelance musician too - my mom is at home. Rochester did work with me on fin aid but still can’t meet some other fabulous packages I have gotten so I’m a no to Rochester - freelance work in this economy is very iffy - good luck

zwankie, that’s $7500 in loans and $2500 in work study per year
over 4 years about $35,000 in loans. It’s an ok package these days
but certainly not great.

It’s only that much in loans if you pay nothing out of pocket. I’d say it’s a pretty good package - if you can come up with just 5k a year (summer employment or parents) not so much in loans after 4 years. I go to a public hs now and my parents have had to pay at least $1,500 a year in fees (AP tests - field trips - sports user fees etc.) that is all money that can go to college costs now.

Thanks Goodschoolhopefully, it’s tough because today he has a job and tomorrow he might not. And sometimes he gets a call 3 hours before a show to play it. You just never know.

Also, I can pay $5k a year from my college fund (in a mutual fund so not doing as well this year as it would have 2 years ago) but my parents can only contribute a little more than they pay for my (catholic) school this year. blah

I’m assuming this is pretty good then?
Rochester National Grant 17,150
Federal Pell Grant 2,675
Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grant 500
Federal Work Study Eligibility 1,250
Loans (Federal Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized, Perkins Loan) 3,750

So basically, each year I’ll have 7,500 in loans?
Basically, I’m deciding between this and UCSD…
For UCSD, I have ~6000 in loans…

Any suggestions? I know the environment is completely different and the curriculum is too… but if you had to choose, which one would you choose?

Rix - Oh yeah, I know how those freelance gigs come in - my dad’s freind keeps a tux in his car and of course his instrument just so he can respond from where ever he is when he gets a call to sub. It isn’t easy. I strongly suggest giving fin aid a call AND letting admissions know that you are really interested in going if you can get the money to work. Let me know how it goes. Best.

pinapplollie

loans 7500 first year, then 8500, 9500 and 9500

comes to $35,000 plus interest on any unsubsidized
probably around $37,000 over 4 years.

is this considered a good financial aid package?

IB Scholarship: $12,000
Rochester National Grant: $12,200
Federal Work Study Eligibility: $2,500
Loans (subsidized/unsubsidized): $5,500

i was pleasantly surprised by the nice scholarship and grant, but i still feel like it isn’t enough. my mom just lost her job, and it may take a while before she finds another one. should i call the finaid office (if it would even do any good), or will i just seem greedy?

What determines the value of the IB scholarship anyways?

is it not the same for all IB students?

They’re only giving me $10,000.

I like it - you should definitely contact financial aid about your mother’s recent job loss. I am sure they will reevaluate your fa offer.
