I'm a applied math undergrad and got accepted by several computational biology phd programs. I tried to avoid simply entering bioinformatics because I want to apply some mathematics to biological problems.

However when I looked for potential advisors, I found they only take computational biology/quantitative biology as their 'sidelines' for they mainly focus on other fields like numerical analysis. I wonder if I follow them as research assistant, could I do much research on computational biology? I thought an independent program would be better, but when it goes into a single department, a good advisor is difficult to find...

Can anyone in computational biology give some advice on how to find advisors? Or what kinds of research are you in now? Thanks!!!
