I will be majoring in CIS in the fall at a university and my question is what exactly will it be like if I major in CIS? I mean I have an idea because Im majoring in it, but I want to know from others who are in it or maybe even graduated and are working somewhere. Im excited but nervous because Im not sure I will like it. Can anyone give me their personal experience in CIS? Any info will help.

I have already completed a Bachelor of Commerce (IS) and am now onto a Post Graduate Diploma in Commerce (IS) and might continue with a Masters after that… I spent my last summer in an Intern position (Junior Software Developer).

If your degree is similar to mine in its structure, you will get a grounding in computer programming (Maybe in Java) learn about the basics of Systems Analysis and Design (The practical and the theory: E.g., Systems Development life cycles, Database Design, Modelling (ERD, DFD, etc)), learn about application development, networking basics, be involved in a systems development project.

I don’t want to talk about how “I” feel about Information Systems… Because that’s what you have to figure out for yourself; how you feel about it, whether it’s for you.

My internship was basically developing database models for a SaaS ERP system and a little bit of C# development…

It’s kind of a boring subject… I didn’t really enjoy it and kind of wish I had chosen something else, but I think overall the salaries are quite good if you specialise in something. For example, Sharepoint… It’s good to choose a new technology to niche in, as you can get equal footing (with regards to experience) than having to compete with 40 year old guys who have coded in C++ for 10 years or something.
