What About Dating?

I will be starting 9th grade at a boarding school and was wondering about dating at boarding school. I have never been at a co-ed school and I am very shy around boys. Do most of the students have serious girlfriends/boyfriends or are there just casual hook-ups?

Is it easier or harder to date at boarding school than a regular local high school? What are the the advantages and disadvantages to dating at boarding school? For example, in my town, the high school boys pick up their dates in their cars. However, it would seem harder for boarding school kids to have privacy with their dates. What if a teacher catches two boarding school students kissing, just kissing!, in the woods? How much trouble would they be in?
What do people like or dislike about the dating scene at their school? Is there anything the school could do to improve relations between boys and girls? Thank you for sharing your thoughts on romance and boarding school.

You need to get in touch with the tommeister.

Hey, relationships happen at all different levels just like at any school. I'd say there are probably more very serious relationships than at your typical school, though. In some ways its harder to date because once you start, you see that person all the time, there isn't a space barrier of not living together, but this could be untrue if you're going to a larger school. How much trouble you would be in depends on the school.

I don't think any school would punish kids for kissing, anyway, unless it was during an inappropriete time.

Right, I was just commenting on what comes with a relationship in general. Should've been more clear.

They usually frown on PDA

There were serious relationships as well as casual hookups at my kids' schools. I also think there is a little more "cross-grade" dating/relationships, because the age of the students is more muddied. That is, a junior may be young for the grade or the age of a normal public school senior. And, of course, there may be PG kids.
One couple at my son's school was caught in a compromising position in an elevator after classroom hours.....It was embarrassing but there was no real punishment.

Their own version of the mile-high club, no doubt.

Yeah, I'd like to know about this too. At Choate, does anybody know what percentage of the freshman class date?

The WBTY Indices only track this statistic back to 2004, when parietals where relaxed at Choate:

Percentage of Freshman Dating
2004 -- 11%
2005 -- 32%
2006 -- 29%
2007 -- 22%

Incidentally, the highest % of dating freshman in 2007 was at a small school in CT, The Gunnery, at 63%.

Hope this helps.

Only 22%? Isn't that kinda low?

That is kind of low, but at least there isn't that much pressure.

Big jump from 2004 to 2005, though!

Where is t3h lovemeister?

hmmmmmm....that's the EXACT same data I have. But the Bunkel data on dating only provides current data, not historical. Do you think olivia567's experience at Choate has any relationship to what kids were doing in 2004?

Hey, it's the lovemeister.

Fun is Fun's data is surprisingly accurate, yet it doesn't tell the whole story.
I'm not sure what the whole story is, but it doesn't tell it, that's for sure.
Gotta get your background story straight, fun.

Reread your own post. It makes no sense whatsoever.

het fun - never question the logic of the lovemeister!

Message received and understood.

Where do these dating stats come from??

All of the various rating systems offer different components although there are some consistant overlaps. WSJ, for instance, offers a statistical analysis on EC's, % playing sports in college by sport and parental income. BSR offers several unusual categories including sexual preference before and after BS, music and television tastes and even a questionnaire based section on fashion preferences. Only the WBTY Indices and the GZM controlled Bunkel Index have dared to sample dating BS teens and their data is admittedly questionable, since you can't really believe anything a teenager says. However, it is the only viable information on the subject currently available.

As access to this data can be prohibitively expensive, I'm happy to supply you with specific information if you tell me the schools you're interested in.
