This board seems to be very heavy on A/E-SPS-H-D and I was wondering why Groton doesn't come up more? Are any of you who are applying to above schools considering it?

Awesome school. Full of traditions and very talented kids. Smaller in number than the A/E's of the world, which I think is a benefit. Tremendous alumni network. Episcopal Church focus. Very Wasp-y, but sometimes kids who feel entitled instead of grateful. But, all in all, a world class choice.

I go to Groton pom_mom. Any questions feel free to ask! It was the best decision I've ever made choosing to go to Groton!

I think Groton is an AWESOME school, just as good as the HADES schools. I think people just refer to the schools you mention because it makes a convenient acronym "HADES" and the schools are all very similar and above 500 kids. They are medium to large schools. But like I said Groton is awesome as is Choate.

It is a great school. The only thing is that you will be so much stressed if you are not motivated for academic success. I heard that it is as good as or even better than Exeter and Andover in academic side. You must work so hard. It is called steam cooker.

they should call it GHADES or something. groton is amazing, just because it's not part of the tsao doesn't mean it's not a good school.

btw their chapel building reminded me of architecture you might find in princeton, perhaps a bit smaller because as we all know universities have more money to spend. :D

academically some people who graduate felt like groton was harder than college, in some way signifying groton was actually harder, but moreover meaning that it really prepares their students for the "after" in boarding school. whee i love groton!!

Thanks so much everyone! We had a great feeling when we visited...I had not heard the pressure cooker aspect from the tour guide (no surprise!), so that's good to know. Does anyone know if the acceptance rate is comparable to that of SPS, Hotchkiss, etc.?

Groton is a great school. I would love for my son to attend there very much.
It has a much smaller environment than others and therefore tight-knight community.
It seems to run high on stress though, because the academics are difficult. Also, the atmosphere seems much more rigid, strict, and tight WASPY than others.
Personally, my children thought the cubicles(the dorm walls that divide the room) were "sketchy," but I liked the fact that they provided rooms for day students.

Yes Groton's and SPS' acceptance rates are very comparable.

did anyone get groton's christmas cards? i kinda feel bad for admission officers in boarding schools now, working through their breaktimes =/ ugh

Having looked at all the top schools, i.e Andover, St. Paul's, Deerfield, I could never get the same feeling as I did at Groton. There is a particular quality about it, perhaps to do it with its small size, that is matchless. I was not limited for choice, but I am extremely glad that I did come to Groton. While academics at Groton are tough, and at times can result in sleepless nights, the pressure is not extreme. After all, isn't one of the factors for going to boarding school better academics? More importantly, the faculty as well as the students are always there to help you. Groton is not as uptight as it may seem - having come Internationally, I felt no trouble adjusting. The faculty and students are extremely considerate and include you from the first moment you step on campus.

Acceptance Rates:
Hotchkiss-20%
St. Paul's-22%
Groton-19%

This is based on boardingschoolreview.com, which I understand can be a little out-dated. Also, acceptance rates can fluctuate from year to year. But in general, each one has close to a 20% acceptance rate, so I think they are comparable. (Groton's is a little lower because of the size.)

You can't compare schools based on acceptance rates.

You guys who try to determine which is "better" between Groton and St. Paul's are ridiculous!!!!!!! I pity ignorant people like you. Seriously, what are you trying to accomplish by putting down their old acceptance percentage numbers in front of you? Does that really get you aywhere? At most, it's like less than 5% difference...
They're both good schools.

p.S. I AGREE with erkybk. Groton's quality of education is just as good as the one at Exeter and Andover.

Personally I think the level of education at these schools are absolutely equal.

HADES + Milton + Groton + Middle Essex.

^ dear kafkareborn,

I have NO idea what Middle Essex is.
It's MIDDLESEX.

we're getting off topic

I think Groton is a great school, and its pretty much on par with exeter, andover, etc.

I'm applying to it, and the only difference I see is community size. Exeter and andover are more like a college, but Groton is like a village.

Some people might like a bigger community and hate small communities because they'll feel trapped and some people might feel drowned in a bigger community and much prefer "close-knit", small communities such as Groton's.

I wrote the acceptance rates because pom_mom asked if the rates were comparable. And yes, they are. I'm comparing the schools by this rate. I consider Hotchkiss, St. Paul's, and Groton an equal education. I found your comment offensive, poss791.

You're right pinkheart. I find most of poss791's comments offensive, mean-spirited and shallow. She says she helps in the admission's dep't of her BS (which is frightening), but then won't reveal what school she goes to. I don't think she knows how she sounds.

^ Hahahaha. I'm really really sorry, you guys. I'll try to be more careful and considerate the next time I post. I just wanna be helpful, I swear. As a student who actually attends one of these schools, it's just sometimes a little frustrating to come in here and see all these "HADES" posts and "this school is SOOOO much better than this one, because everyone knows this school" by oblivious prospective students. Honestly, the students at these schools have never even heard of the term, HADES, and don't think of ourselves grouped like that.

I've been attending boarding schools for almost seven years, and I have a lot of friends and families who go to these schools that are frequently discussed in CC all over New England. I feel like I have good information and experience that I can share and perhaps help confused applicants in some ways!

However, parlabane, I believe it's the most sensible thing to not reveal any personal information on the internet. If you still desperately wanna know what school I go to, it's darn easy to figure out if you look through my previous posts.
