hey, my friend told me visit this site, so i’ve been reading the messages. however, i cant find anything that relates to IB (intl. bacc. program). there are lots of suggestions about ap classes, but what about IB courses and exams? someone mentioned having to take ap calc for wharton, but would the IB calc exam count as well?

Are you in the full diploma program or just getting individual certificates for your classes? IB Calc (mathematics hl/the more advance one, right?) would be just as good as AP Calc.

There isn't an IB Calc. There's Math HL, which is equivalent to the AP AB Calc class. But for the AP BC class (the one that actually gets you credit), you need to take "Math Further" for the equivalent credit. Hope this helps.

yes yes yes, that's what I meant, IB Mathematics, which is the higher math versus IB Mathematical Studies (I believe that's correct and that I didn't switch the two around).

IB math HL is just as rigorous as AP BC...maybe even more so. There are just discrepencies in what is taught, especially depending on the option topics the teachers choose to pursue.

Yes, I know that. However, there're two levels to HL math. One is just Higher Level Math, the other is like "Mathematics with Further Mathematics"..which is the one that Penn gives a Math 104 C.U. to if you get a 7 on the test, the equivalent of a AP BC credit.

Further Mathematics is a separate IB elective you take. It's a possible sixth subject someone can take. . .it's basically all the options available for IB Math HL. Watch Catch said is correct. They don't give credit for just Math HL but they do for Math HL with Further Math. Kinda bs if you ask me, not giving credit for Math HL is crazy. Doesn't affect me personally, as I'm taking both BC and math hl.

One thing I wanted to know is how much Penn values the IB Diploma. It seems that they aren't as crazy about it as others are, as I think when comparing the acceptance rates with other colleges among IB diploma candidates, penn had the smallest difference between the normal rate and the rate among IB students.

at our school, we take the equivalent AP exams for our classes. Methods II IB SL is our Calc AB, but most of us got 4s or 3s. The next year we just take AP Calc BC, not Math HL

Penn seems to value AP much more than IB. I did full diploma and to be completely honest, it seemed like a waste of time. It might have helped me get into college, but now that I'm here, all I have are 2 credits (b/c Penn only accepts HL, and each HL class is a 2-year course), while AP students come here with much more than that.

I did math HL (without further mathematics) - if I were you and wanted the credit, I would just take the AP test. Actually, for most SL classes, try to see if the AP test is similar to what you're learning, because that'll definitely help you out more than taking IB tests.

for ib math there are: methods HL, methods SL, and math studies. most people take methods SL, testing out junior year, which is what i am doing. so i guess that dosent count? i dont think our school has ap calc at all, but just an ib calc class. so maybe its mainly the "study on your own" deal.

APs are easier, or the ones I took seemed so... I'm doing full IB diploma as well. The thing that I think is most unfair is that our teachers predict grades for us, or just give us grades for internal assessments, but to be safe they always tend to grade on the low side. That way, they're guaranteed not to be moderated because IB always moderates up and I've never heard of them moderating down. Maybe they do it once in a blue moon. Cruel, cruel process. More people get 5s on APs than 7s on IBs.

im a junior taking math methods (all we do is prepare for AP Calc AB) this year, and signed up to take Math HL next year. Btw, im in full diploma program. Any tips for Math HL?
