What about the ranks of the math and english classes

Hello Riverside students, apparently I've been put in bswt 003 and math 8b. I would like to ask what happens in bswt 003 and if your in that class, is that a really bad thing, because i have a bad feeling about this class. I think it's supposed to be for people who dont normally speak english. I would also like to know if anyone is able to tell me the rankings for these classes like from the most far basic to the most far advanced, please. Thank you.

bswt 003 < English 004 < English 1A < English 1B < English 1C

correct me if im wrong

Yes, I think you are right.

I was originally placed in that class ,BSWT. I called my adviser and went all out on her. She e mailed the lady incharge of the test and reviewed my test and was move up to Eng 004, although I will be taking eng 001 B hopefully in fall. BSWT is an esl class so not good

How bad is BSWT 003 in terms of english, I am going to be a bio major. Like are all the english classes a quater long?

Yeah, all the English classes last the whole quarter.

BSWT003 is the start of the English sequence; it’s usually for people who didn’t have English as a first language or people who just didn’t do well on the placement exam.

Don’t feel bad though, you’ll have plenty of time to get through the whole sequence. :]

dude that’s awesome
cuz the you an get an A in those classes easily and then get a better gpa
than trying to take classes way above your level and failing

That’s my mentality too. I don’t really care if others place above me. It’s better to be at your level and excel… or at the very least not have to fail. That’s why for my math placement test, I didn’t even guess on the ones I didn’t know. It said not to do so for more accurate class placement anyway.

Just because you aren’t “ahead,” it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re behind. You’re just where you are supposed to be. So, don’t worry about it. (:

true but when I found out I was mad cause that is not my level and I know it .It would be weird going from a B in AP Lit and AP Language to an esl class

Did you pass your AP test? O_O cuz… AP score overrides english test.

There’s no English1B in the fall btw. Have to wait til winter. ;p

I got a 2 :(. But A 2 in a AP should really prove the point of not being an esl student). I iznt no studiat ooof ESL Jk. Im taking eng 101 at a JC so I have no english for fall quarter

:/

Well, a 2 doesn’t even show up on their system…

it does except they dont show in my ucr because there is no point. UCSB shows them doesn’t matter what you get

I guess so

I think a 2 is described by college board as “possibly” qualified

Only a 1 is described as “not qualified to receive college credit”

There’s always that impression of a cutoff at 3 though…

same thing, I got a 2 in AP literature, I was wondering if I am able to get into at least english 004 because I believe you get a grade and pass on, I took AP Lang too and passed, so I think I should start at Engl 004, but will they let me?

it doesnt hurt to try asking. I say given the circumstances of passing the AP lit class, you should be allowed to start at ENGL 004 atleast

I have not idea what is going in the english classes because I never really paid attention to it. The website told me my SAT qualified me to not take the test so yeppp  I’ll take what they give me.

Do you think i will be able to get out of bswt oo3 with a 2 on the Ap lit test?

You only get credit for AP tests if the score is 3+ unfortunately. 1s and 2s don’t count for anything.

I’m guessing they assumed that anyone who got a 2 on AP lit would be placed in something like math004 or higher…

so they never did anything about scores of 2
