Quick Question: Why does Cornell admit some students, who applied for regular decision, early March. What does that mean for others who applied during the same period, but have not received an acceptance or denial letter from Cornell. I know a couple of students who were admitted early March 2016 Cornell who applied on January 1st. Could you explain what does that mean for others who have not been notified.
Colleges of Engineering, A&S (I think only those 2) do not and cannot admit students before the Ivy day because they are part of the league. The other schools are permitted to admit students prior to that day, and they do admit a small percentage of students prior to the Ivy day, but most students are admitted on the same day. Obviously it means those students who were admitted early probably have higher stats, no different than students who get likely letters from CoE and CAS.
CAS, CoE, CALS, HumEc all send out likely letters or diversity hosting month letters letting highly qualified applicants know they will be admitted. These letters go out to a select number of highly desired applicants–but if you didn’t get one please don’t worry! It does not mean you didn’t get in–it just means that you are still being considered (as most people are). Hotelies and Architects hear at variable times.
There has also been a trend that female engineering students may get a “likely letter”.
There is something called Ivy League Common Notification–or some name similar to that.

“On a common date, usually in late March or early April, applicants to the Ivy institutions will be notified of admission decisions and financial aid awards, unless they have been notified earlier under Early Decision Plan or Early Action Plan procedures. (Letters are mailed beginning in February for the Schools of Hotel Administration, and Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell, and beginning in February for the School of Nursing at Penn.)”
The early notification date seems to have moved to early March instead of Feb as quoted above.
As mentioned above, the other colleges at Cornell may send out likely letters, generally to targeted populations. These likely letters almost always seem to result in admission, but they are not admission letters the way SHA and ILR letters are.
Just an FYI: the “common date” referenced above is known as “Ivy Day” – but it has also shifted in time. When I applied (shortly after the earth cooled), my Ivy notification letters were dated April 14. I received my notices through the mail on April 18th and 19th! Can you imagine that? At the time, we didn’t think anything of it. We were on watch for the “thick envelope” in our mailboxes.
hahahahahha
@T26E4 – I absolutely recall everyone calling home to see if the mail had arrived yet, although I always thought April 15th was notification day, and the letters arrived thereafter.
Do you remember white-out in colors other than white, for covering up typos on apps you had phoned long distance to receive?
Since I have started paying attention again, it appears to now be the Thursday at 5pm before the Friday that precedes April 1st, so moves around when April 1st falls on a Sunday or Monday, I think.
@CT1417 hahahaha! I remember typing my essays on a correctable typewriter – that was a big deal then. They were on fine paper, too. I honestly don’t recall typing the apps, however. I wonder if I filled them out by hand? I never called requests for apps – usually they were in the pile of brochures/mailers already or I got a few by requesting them through post cards.
“Long distance” hahaha – I haven’t even heard that phrase in a looooong time! Last night we were watching some DVRd “America’s Funniest Videos” with our college freshman who was home for the holiday. They showed kids who didn’t know how to work a rotary dial telephone. They said: “How do you type in the numbers?” We all had a good laugh. My kiddo said that although she’s never had to use one, at least she was familiar with them due to her and my enjoying Three Stooges shorts when she was younger. That’s my girl!
