I took ACT in February and got a 29. How many points do need to go up in order to be a competitive ED applicant?

It depends on the strength of the rest of your application, as Tufts has a very holistic review process. But try to get it to at least a 31-32.

Okay, I got a 31 now. Is that good?

There is no “good” score that will guarantee you acceptance. It’s a very holistic process. Some kids with 35 don’t make it in. You should also take the SAT and SAT Subject tests. You might do better at it. 31 in itself is not a great score and will not get you accepted unless the rest of your application looks amazing.

The mean ACT composite score of the 2015 entering class is 31: [Accepted Student Profile Tufts University Admissions Department](Accepted Student Profile | Tufts Admissions)

So, so long as your GPA is solid (or shows an upward trend), your high school is know for academic rigor, and you challenged yourself. I think that’s fine.

Should you keep taking the ACT or switch to the SAT? At this point, I don’t think you should. My son was accepted ED2 with a 31 ACT score, and he never took the SATs. We felt that he had hit a number that any school he was applying to could live with, so we advised him to stop taking tests and focus on everything else.

Tufts seems to place emphasis on many other parts of the application. I think no matter what your score is, the rest of the application still must be original and authentic.

Good luck.
