What activity for common app extracurricular essay?

Hi everyone,
I am writing my short statement on the common app which asks you to expand on one of your extracurricular activities (in about 250 words). I can't decide between two activities to use, though. Any ideas on which would be better?

1) Figure Skating. This is good because I have been doing it for a long time (commitment), but I just don't know if it will be to blah because so many people write about sports; setting goals, confidence, hard work, etc.

2) Volunteering at a local art festival. I would emphasize my love of my community and wanting to continue my city's culture, etc. I do this every year, BUT it is only for one weekend each summer, and on my list of extracurricular activities, I put it near the bottom since I spend so little time doing it. (That list is in order of importance to you).

I feel that the second one would emphasize good values about me, but I am unsure because of the fact that I spend so little time on it compared to my other activities.

Thank you for any input!!

My personal opinion is to write about the one you are more passionate about. The best writing usually comes from a place of passion.

Good luck! :)

I think #1

1 seems to refect you, and your commitment to it.

As long as what you write reflects you and your passion for it, it will be unique. If I were a reader, I’d much rather know about your skating than the art festival. Volunteering at a festival is a good thing, but it doesn’t require the level of skill that skating does.
