What all do you do at UT Orientation?

Thank you for all the information everyone, especially that pdf from 2007. Fantastic! I'm looking forward to orientation. =]

haha no I don't really mind my mom being there. In all honesty, she will most likely not be the only one crying on move in day. haha. but she's going to be excited about family orientation. Anyway, thanks for the info everyone. :)

i met a lot of people at orientation but i never talked to them afterwards.
there was a bunch of scheduled events that "helps" you get more familiar with the campus.
but i thought it was kind of a waste of time.
the most important part was obviously the registration.

As of now, I'm not planning on going to the orientation. how early can I register for classes online?

From the "After Admission" FAQ page

When may I register for classes? May I register before orientation?

Newly admitted students are required to receive academic advising before registering for classes. Academic advisors from the college or school that your major is in will be available during orientation to help you make good decisions about which courses to take. Because of this—and many other reasons—orientation is highly recommended for incoming students.

Students who do not attend summer orientation are not able to register for classes for their first semester until very near the beginning of the semester.

When registering for subsequent semesters, you’ll be assigned a registration access period.

aww that sucks. thanks though :)

but is it possible for me to go to orientation ONLY to register for classes? as in go and register at orientation and then leave.

No, you have to go to a bunch of events and advising over the course of orientation to be able to register for classes.

eww. cause I think I already know enough from the Honors Colloquium during the summer. but if I have to, I will.

@ OP...you have copious amounts of sex.

Kidding. Kind of. :)

during orientation, will there be tours or free time to look at the dorms and get a "preview" of the rooms firsthand?

No I don't think so, dorm selection is already over. Previewing dorms should have been done before you applied for housing.

Orientation is a week long party with a couple of mandatory meetings.

My best advice: don't fall asleep the night before registration and just stay out all night. If you fall asleep you may not wake up and you will be stuck in crappy classes.

It was a really fun time.

does anyone know if there is a deadline for orientation registration?

yes. when I registered, the deadline for me to pay was February 16, but I'm not sure if it's the same for everyone. You can try registering without paying and the registration-confirmation page should tell you when you need to pay it by. You can always change your info or delete your registration if you haven't paid yet.

What's the size limit per session, if any?

As for the dorms:

at least last year, you did not have to have your final room choice updated until something like July 31, so you could "preview" at orientation if you wanted. The only places you can really check out are Jester East, Kinsolving, and Duren. And to check out Kinsolving or Duren, you'd have to have a summer resident let you in to their room. But most dorm rooms are relatively similar, so unless you are staying at San Jac or Duren, the room you get at Jester is pretty similar to the one you will get anywhere else.

Henry... That's the deadline for orientation registration? What about the people who want to go but won't find out if they are accepted until march?

well, it said February 16 when I registered. That's why I said I wasn't sure whether it was the same for everyone. I think that the due date depends on when you register for a session. My guess is that once you register, you have 2 weeks to pay.

so, anyone know about the size limit per session? I'm going to the first one and I hope it won't be ridiculously crowded.

After you are accepted, you will get a letter inviting you to orientation. There are six orientation sessions for fall 2009 admits:
Office of the Dean of Students - New Student Services - Summer Orientation
If it is like last year, the first week or two will fill up first. Earlier is a little bit better because fewer classes have filled up but they save spaces in the freshman seminars for people from every orientation session.

I think that each session will be the same size. They all fill to capacity. If you delay too long in registering for one, they will all be full. In April, there should still be openings, no problem. By Memorial Day, they may all be full. There seems to be room for almost everyone who wants to go.

Since we won't get our AP scores until July, how would we know which classes we are able to waive when we register at orientation? do we just register for classes we know we will take and then change it later?
