I graduated this year from school with physics, biology, chemistry to take up medicine, but now I want to shift over to Business administration. My problem is that I didn't take 12 grade math (as it's not required for med. in our country) but it's a prerequisite to enter any business program.Though that has all been sorted out as I have been told to give SATII to make up for that but I'm getting the jitters about the course-load.I've never done commerce as other people who took it up in my school, and I need to maintain my scholarship, but I fear my grades may sink as I'll be completely new to the subject. I don't even know if covering up with 11th and 12th grade accounts, economics, and business studies will help as it's ought to vary from each country. What can I do right now so that when I get to college, at least I won't be staring at the professor like a loser? Can I try and cover up right now?I have alot of time on hand as I'l be joining next fall.

A number of schools will require you to take either remedial math or math in the summer to make up any math deficiency ( University of Cincinnati for example et al.) Interestingly, not all business programs are the same. Some will only require you to take 2 semesters of statistics in college, which makes Precalculus unnecessary. Some, such as Carnegie Mellon, require a whole year of calculus and other math courses. You need to check both the entrance requirement and the curriculum for any schools of interest to you.

thanks for the reply taxguy, but my problem is that I'm shifting over to a completely different stream as I've studied science in my 10+2 so I wanted to know if I could study here so that things don't look so out of focus when I actually start with classes.

help me out ...

It's not clear to me from your message if you are talking about going into an MBA program, or if you are seeking a second undergraduate degree in business. This makes a big difference in what advice I can give. Also, what kind of institution are you at?

Certainly, you need to review your math skills, but that is less important for an MBA degree and more important for an undergraduate degree.

hey econprof
I'm going for an undergrad degree in business at University of Waterloo next fall but according to the schooling system in my country, we must choose between commerce, arts and science after the 10th grade and I took up science, so would I be at a disadvatage of not having a commerce background?
thanks

I'm not that familiar with the University of Waterloo, but most high school students in the US or in Canada would not have much background in commerce. In the US, students might take one or two semesters of economics, but that would be about it. I teach in a business school in the states, and we don't assume that students have ANY background in business. However, we do assume that they have an adequate math background (through pre-calculus).

THe most important thing when you start your undergraduate studies is to seek help from the teaching assistants and professors. College work is hard, and students have different backgrounds. Professors for the most part understand this and will help you with whatever questions you have. You are definitely not a loser because you don't understand something!

thanks so much sir, that's a big relief.
