I ask this because my son with his GPA, which is low thanks to a horrible 9th grade year, but not counting 9th is respectable is not comparable to his fairly strong SAT score of 2000. In other words his GPA puts him in one caliber school and his SAT score puts him in another.

So my question is how do all you experts out there classify your reach schools? Where do you fall with regard to GPA? Where are you with regard to their middle 50th percentile SAT/ACT scores?

How do you classify a reach school? I want to know this myself as we are learning as we go along, but I am sure there are many other kids/parents are wondering the same thing. Thanks!

Well, it depends...We have classified a reach school as one in which we actually "match" the middle 50th, but admit only 20-30% of applicants regardless....some schools are always a reach, no matter what your stats are....That is how we classified our reaches...

another way is looking at comparable students from our hs who have been admitted/rejected over the past 2 years.....

My d did not apply to any schools that she was below 50% by any measure ( and not because she is a superstar), but rather because college admissions from our high school have been dysmal for the last couple of years......
