What are admissions standards for out of state students?

I know U Dub is highly competitive, but how does that apply for oos students? I'm from CO. Not eligible for financial aid. I've been told their standards are not as competitive. Is this true?

I was an out of state transfer student from Georgia and I didn’t get in…I don’t blame myself. I only got serious about school my junior year. 3.67 GPA, 300/600 class rank, 27 ACT composite, no volunteering/extra curricular, no sports, 9 AP credits.

It isn’t easier. You should still apply. I’m applying for transfer now… hope I get in this time.

Ah great then I sure as hell am not getting in. My sat and ecs were impressive though, as is my course rigor.

oliviabartel: UW doesn’t just look at your GPA though. Yeah it’s tough, even though they’re looking to OOS students to pay more tuition money. UW has a holistic approach, so even if your GPA isn’t that great, the rest of your application could tip the scale in your favor. Also, are you a freshman applicant? It’ll be easier than transfer… transferring is highly competitive and UW favors community college applicants based on a transfer program that they have. Unfortunately, transfer slots are a lot more limited than freshman ones and depends on the number of students coming back.

Anyway, don’t let this deter you! Good luck!

Thanks! I guess we will just have to wait and see. Sent in my app December 1st. I’ll hear back on the 15th hopefully.

Good luck! Don’t become super nervous if you don’t hear back on the 15th… they have a ton of mail to send out and to not overwhelm the postal offices, they put them in batches and actually deliver the mail to several different post offices (even though there’s just one up the street from the admissions office) on different days.

UW accepts about 62% of OOS applicants. That number will continue to rise. Write a good essay, since that’s very important to them.

I just realized I didn’t specify which 15th… 15th of MARCH. Through the 31st, they mentioned. So I have a ways to go. Hopefully I’ll have either gotten a few acceptance/rejections already so I’ll be numb to whatever kind of joy or pain I see.

62% is comforting. I think I’m a competitive candidate with my SAT, course selection, EC’s, and my essay. My essay WAS pretty good. Put some effort in there.

Thanks for all the answers!

Haha yeah, December would be way too early and they send out all the mail in March now. I remember my year was the last one they sent letters out starting December… I’m so lucky to have gotten it before winter/(Christmas? Holiday?) break (I never know what to call the 2 week break because President’s Weekend is called “Winter Break!”)…

Anyway, from this: " I think I’m a competitive candidate with my SAT, course selection, EC’s, and my essay." I think your chances are better than you expect. Now the wait will be crazy, but you’re almost there! And almost done with high school :)
