Hi. I'm new here, and I'm finding all the acronyms bewildering. D and S are daughter and son -- I have made it that far! But DH? DD? And then there are all the college ones -- EFC I figure is expected family contribution. But sometimes my head spins. Is there a list somewhere? Or would anyone like to chime in with some explanations? Thanks! (Ha, never mind, I see there's a thread I somehow missed before. Think I'll make up a new one -- OTP -- overly tired parent.)

Welcome to CC, BP! You’ll get the hand of things soon
and Happy Thanksgiving!

Welcome, BP. That list will help you get started, and if your cc usage becomes an addiction (as it has for many of us), pretty soon you’ll see new acronyms and figure out instantly what they mean from context. Happy Thanksgiving!

What’s also confusing to many new HS senior parents is distinguishing public from private. The University of Miami is a private school; Miami University of Ohio is public. University of Pennsylvania is private and an Ivy. It is the only “university of STATE NAME” that is not a public. The College of William and Mary is a public “university”; Wesleyan University and Bucknell University are private liberal arts “colleges.” Wesleyan University is not the same place as Wesleyan College, Wesly College, Ohio Weslyan, Illinois Wesleyan, etc. etc.

Is New Jersey the only state (or commonwealth) that does not have a “University of STATE NAME?”

My DD called me a HP! Helicopter parent.

"Is New Jersey the only state (or commonwealth) that does not have a “University of STATE NAME?”

It has The College of New Jersey.

OP (which means Original Poster, or the person who started the thread): The thread linked above is comprehensive, but perhaps too much so. If you are wondering about specific acronyms, I for one have no problem if you just post your question here.

DD = Dear Daughter (or Darling Daughter)
DS = Dear/Darling Son
DH = Dear/Darling Husband
DW = Dear/Darling Wife

Other family acronyms:
SIL = sister-in-law
BIL/MIL/FIL = brother/mother/father-in-law

Also for newcomers. Once you sign in you can go to “control panel” and “edit your options”.

I find its helpful if you change your show threads option to “show all threads” instead of seeing just recent ones

The University of Pennsylvania is NOT that state’s public flagship- it is private.

Also choose the classic or fresh look to your page from the bottom lower left- a lot of us parents like the old, darker colors (our aging eyes?).
