I’ve heard that you have to have a strong voice and sound distinct. But should I mention my qualifications at all, or would that be too forced? What are some do’s and don’t’s for essays? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
I think that all that the college essay is meant to do is get a feel for who you are. Of course, trying to project yourself onto a two-dimensional sheet of paper with a limited word count is a very difficult thing to do; hence the real challenge in writing such an essay. Just be honest and don’t be afraid to express what you are passionate about. In my son’s essay for college, he admitted to having a passionate dislike for math; it didn’t seem to hurt him at all.
Colleges want to hear about your experiences and your qualifications. So yeah, go ahead and put your accomplishments in the spotlight. I think it’s always more interesting to hear about those accomplishments in terms of what led one down that path to begin with and what was taken away from having the experience. Good luck.
Thanks for your response, it was very helpful!
Whatever you are writing about, make sure to write about how YOU felt. Too many essays only describe what happened. How did a situation make you feel? How did you react to what happened in your essay? And so on.
