What are colleges' opinions regarding StudGov?

Just a general Student Government thread.

Do they think it's a legitimate class where you help run the school's activities, or do they just view it as another one of those filler classes for lazy people?

Like I want to do StudGov legitimately to help out and it is a serious class at my school.

How does your school's StudGov class work? Is it a joke, or does work actually get done in that class? How do they choose people to get into the class? Is it just class officers or is it open to other students as well?

I'm just wondering because going into my senior year, I'm really interested in going into my school's StudGov class. There are class officers in that class, but it's open to applications. It's a limited class so there are applications, interviews, etc.

I would love to go to STUDGov.

My school has a student government, but no student government class. I’ve never actually heard of such a thing.

And it’s a total popularity contest that annoys the heck out of me.

Bleh. I hate our student government, it does nothing except play bad music at lunch. I would hope they look past a title and consider what you actually do to improve the school. Because good ideas don’t win officer positions, t-shirts and popularity do.

Well, in my school our student government classes actually do work. I’m the Council Treasurer, above all class officers, and I approve and work with all the fundraising paperwork submitted by the various clubs, as well as all fieldtrip requests that come into our office. Also, any work for any school event that we are coordinating is worked on during the class time.

Ask your guidance counselor about previous students who have taken the class and see if it seems to have affected their applications.

My personal opinion… even if you do actually do work, it’s not worthy of being a “class.” It should be an extracurricular.
