What are colleges REALLY LOOKING FOR in their applicants??

Hi guys!!
Honestly what are colleges looking for in applicants?? Is it standardized test scores for those who are capable of achieving a great score?? GPA's & Class rank?? Is it factors such as character, essays, recommendations, minority status, residency,or etc.? Or is it all of the above??

Honestly what are they looking for?? What makes us the desirabe canidate??

If we knew, why would college admissions be such a crapshoot? lol.

What I personally believe to be the most important parts of an application are the GPA, strength of schedule and essays. Those three pieces of information show the academic side of a student as well as their ability to look back on the first 17 years of life and discover what is truly meaningful to them. Essays can provide a college with information as to what a student can bring to campus and the community as well as show off a creative side.

SAT scores only confirm the GPA and some schools don't rank students (mine doesn't). I am sure that being a minority helps in some ways, but to what extent I have no idea.

A recent Newsweek article claims that the most important factors in admissions are as follows: GPA/class rank/rigor of classes, SAT, essays, recommendations, extra curricular activities. However, this was a generalization for all colleges and does not particularly pertain to the 25 most selective colleges in the country.
