That's good to hear that Cornell isn't that preppy like I had heard, but on the negative side, I hate when people are constantly complaining about being somewhere when it was their choice. I'm going to keep it on my list though, and thank you for all the great responses.

Speaking of NYU, how is it going to college in a big city with no campus? I've pretty much ruled out all city colleges (NYU, Northeastern, BU, etc.) for this reason.

joewii - freshman yr is pretty sweet for the 97% of students that dorm. freshman yr, all of the dorms surround washington square park, which is sort of our campus. that's also where the library/student center is. after that, the dorms get spread out all over NYC and a lot of students live off-campus to save $$$, since you basically commute even from a dorm. there isn't a strong sense of community, but you can find your own little community at NYU.

with regards to competition- there are indeed a good proportion of competitive students, but it depends on the field of study or track. obviously, premeds and prelaws have to be competitive, comm's and aem's generally do not. but regardless, i haven't really met any assholishly competitive people- youll be helped out if you need it, they wont check out all the books in the library so no one else can use them (heard that legend too).

w/ regard to elitism- not really prevalent. with so many people you wont notice a huge majority of any single type of dude or gal. check out what people are wearing/what their hair looks like during prelim weeks or finals... youll see the only real majority is wearing sweats, tshirts, flipflops or sneakers
