I know that in most dorms, the freshman dorms do not have individual kitchens in each one. What are the kitchens like? Are they good industrial kitchens? Are they more like the break room at a work place? If anyone here goes to UH Manoa, can they give me a detailed description of the kind of kitchens there? I don't really want to eat all my meals in the campus diners.

The dorm kitchens in my dorm were small, had a stove, sink, and full-sized refrigerator, in addition to some cabinets. Mostly we just used it to cook on the big stove and wash dishes. You could hardly put food in the fridge without people stealing it, so it wasn't really worth it. Not that great but better than what was in the rooms (nothing except a tiny minifridge and a microwave).

The kitchen in my daughters dorm has a nice stove, large refrigerator, microwave and sink. No storage as such. Food left in the kitchen is regarded as fair game for everyone. She uses it a lot. Has a small fridge (her own) in her room. Keeps her cooking stuff/plates etc in her room.

Thank you!

Did the dorm rooms come with the mini fridges, or did you have to supply them yourselves?

It varies. My daughters school she had to get her own. Lowe's has nice ones with slightly larger freezers which is something she really wanted. My son's school provided a very very small fridge.

Thank you so much! These are things I need to know! I'm planning to move to Hawaii and go to college there, and things are so much more expensive on the island than they are here(('Cause everything has to be shipped in)), but produce that is grown on the island is very cheap, so it would be easier to buy a meal plan that isn't as expensive, and just do most of my own cooking. Living off of rice and tomatoes, and olive oil and spinach is actually really awesome!

Mine only has a full size refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, and sink.

Some of them don't even have stoves? Would there be another place on campus that one would be permitted to cook?

My dorm's "kitchens" don't have a stove either, just a microwave, a refrigerator (my food has not been stolen yet!), a sink and a closet.

We do have two fully-equipped kitchens for student use, but they have to be reserved at least one week in advance. They are not intended for individual students who want to cook their own meals but for events like a cookie bake & sale or cultural groups who want to have real Indian (or Chinese or Mexican or Kosher or Vegan or...) meals together once in a while.

I should mention that all students at my college are required to be on a full meal plan, so the kitchen situation is probably different at most colleges.

Your going to have to look at your college's website or call them. Most places at least have a picture of the dorm kitchen on their website.

We do have a barbeque grill we can use.

On the University of Hawaii website, there aren't any pictures of the dorm kitchens(only 1 per building), and I have emailed the representative of the housing committee last week but still haven't gotten a response back.

I called the Hawaii folks, and they said that the dorm kitchens are usually abandoned and that it has a nice stove, oven that sort of stuff... I'll have to get a few pots and pans, but I think it'll be alright. There is a barbeque pit in the field behind one of the upperclassman dorms, so if I need to do something like that, I'll be set! ^_^

Mine has an oven, stove top and sink basically. I don't think anyone uses it to cook day-to-day since the dining halls are way more convenient, but we use it a lot for special events like floor/suite breakfasts or cookies or what have you. I would think that's probably the case for most dorm kitchens.
