What are good schools that give good merit scholarships?

I am a junior in high school. I've been doing a lot of college research, and have found that many of the schools I am interested in are very expensive. My family is in that lovely income bracket where we can't afford to pay the sticker price, but we won't qualify for financial aid. I have been looking at schools like Rice, WashU, Yale, Penn, etc., but I'm starting to think I should start looking at lower tiers for schools that would give me scholarships. I am from Wisconsin, so UW-Madison is always an affordable option, and since I have a 3.9 UW GPA and a 35 on the ACT, my GC says I might even get a scholarship there. However, I am not interested in all of the partying, and I want to get away from this state if possible. What private schools would have merit scholarships to the point where it would be worth my while to go there instead of Madison so I could save some money for grad school? I have been having some trouble finding schools that have the intellectual atmosphere I want without the large sticker price. Any help would be appreciated.

You would go to the University of Alabama for free

^ The OP’s GPA and test scores qualify for Alabama’s Presidential Scholarship.
That means free tuition for out of state students. S/he’d still be responsible for room and board, books, fees, travel costs. http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out_of_state.html

Have a look at the Kiplinger “best value” colleges.
The second-to-last and third-to-last columns show merit scholarship distributions.
