Son made 34 composite twice with several 35 in various subjects after having taken ACT twice. New SAT score 1470. Grade point average for junior was 4.26 weighted. Has 5 in AP Calculus and three 4 in other AP classes. Varsity golf, oboe (high ranking youth orchestra experience), and nationally ranked marching band experience. Several honor organizations.
Can anyone provide insight to his chances at:
U of Southern California
Cornell
Vanderbilt
Northwestern
Rice
Harvard
Thanks for any insights.
Does he volunteer? What’s his race (bc it does matter)? Where do you live? Is he a 1st gen student? Whats his planned major? These would all help me answer better.
As it stands, your son has a great ACT and GPA, and good EC’s that really show depth. So I’ll take a gander at his chances anyway.
U of Southern California - admit/wl
Cornell - wl
Vanderbilt - wl
Northwestern - reject
Rice - wl
Harvard - reject
Im guessing wl/reject at most schools simply because those are VERY prestigious, and unless he’s majoring in music your son doesn’t have major-related EC’s.
My predictions:
U of Southern California - Accepted
Cornell - Waitlisted
Vanderbilt - Accepted
Northwestern - Waitlisted
Rice - Accepted
Harvard - Rejected
These are rough predictions. In reality, admissions for top tier universities can be very unpredictable, so no one really can accurately predict his chances. Be sure to have some safety schools and hope for the best. Best of luck!
Thank you so much to both of you for responding. I did not include all of his music honors but he is not majoring in music although he still wants to participate in the University ensembles.
In response to your inquiries, he is not a minority, not a first generation, we live in Florida and he plans to major in pre-med fields. We are financially able to pay for schooling without assistance. We are new to the application process and not even sure how to handle a waitlist issue. We are really newbie parents to this process.
For example, how do you address housing issues when we will not know all the potential schools til April 1st? One school said we needed to make housing application ASAP and we won’t know the other schools til April. Also, how does waitlisting really work? How long does that process take until we can finalize the schools accepting him?
What is his overall GPA? Is the 4.26 just junior year, or is that his GPA as of the end of junior year?
4.26 weighted overall at end of junior year. Thank you for asking. At the end of his first semester of senior, overall is 4.21 but I do not know if that was sent to all the schools. He was waitlisted for Univ of Chicago with early decision application.
