What are his chances?

My son is top quarter of his class in competitive large high school taking all AP/IB courses. SAT scores are Reading 590, Math 780, writing 580. What are his chances of getting into UT? Is there someone at UT that can advise us on if he can get into Engineering in particular? I'd love to talk to a human with real-world knowledge about whether his math SAT score will give him enough of a boost in spite of not being in top 8%?

A 1950 SAT and top 25% will not do it, even with your son’s high math SAT score. Chances are very slim, making UT a reach.

He will probably be put on the Coordinated Admission Program (CAP) in which he is guaranteed admission after completing two semesters at another University of Texas and earning a 3.2 GPA.

Definitely will not get into engineering. But if he applies to social work, performing arts, etc. maybe he will get in and he can transfer

If he is put in CAP rather than admitted, sure, he can automatically transfer to UT but he won’t be guaranteed admission to engineering. If he’s admitted to engineering, great. If not, he should go to one of the other excellent engineering schools out there; help him choose some good matches and safeties.
