What are 'Honors and Awards'

I'm new to this whole idea of thinking about college. I just finished freshman year, and will be a sophomore this upcoming school year.

Once I started reading some of the posts in this forum, I was dumbfounded.Their is so much that I don't know about. When I was reading some chance threads, a lot of people mentioned Awards, and so on. But they were all abbreviated. ( at least that's what it seemed to me)

My question is what are some awards and honors that a high school kid can get? (One that is aiming high... like maybe an ivy league college) How does one get them? What do they signify?

I'm so confused....

Awards can be won from a variety of different reasons. The kids on here are exceptional and most have won awards from various competitions. Science Olympiad is one example. Others have won awards because their schools offered them. For example, the Harvard Book Award is given out at my school and it is given each year to one exceptional junior who exhibits high achievement in the humanities.

So yeah, there are a variety of different awards that can be received. You just need to put yourself out there. What does it signify? That your brilliant in one way or another. ;)
