I'm new to these forums and I was wondering...what are "hooks"? The word keeps coming up everywhere I look, "I'm unhooked"....etc...and it's listed on "chances" lists....what are hooks?

Specific things in an applicant that can either: get them into the college 100%, make/break the decision.

For example, a recruited athlete would be a hook. Curing cancer would be a hook :), international awards, crazy things that very few high school students can do.

There are several types of hooks.
They are as follows:
Being a recruited athlete
Being a legacy
Being a legacy whose family is a substantial contributor to the college
(has more weight than just being a legacy)
Being an under represented minority
- Being the child of a celebrity
Hooks that are not in these categories but can set an applicant apart from thousands of appilcants are:
- Having a special talent demonstrating extraordinary skill and individual accomplishment usually on the International or National level - especially in an area where the applicant can use these talents and skills in the college community. The hook may be more interesting if the talent is unique

Don't sweat about it too much. If they are real hooks, they are something you cannot just decide to do on the spot. Look at the above. Hooks would be something effort by itself cannot change, so just do your best the way you are going and don't freak yourself out.

ya...u can climb into britney spear's stomach and be born and get into harvard

lol

or somehow get Bill Gates to be your Godfather.

i forgot, britney spear's probably wont know how to distinguish harvard and haverford and might get u into haverford instead

Not that Haverford's bad or anything roll eyes
