^Yet recruit status is something the college confers on an athlete; the athlete has no control over that.

“Several languages” are a tip, not a hook.

If I indicated that the lanuage spoken in my home and first language I learned was arabic does that give me a boost in my app?

I disagree. Outside of a few top athletes in a couple high profile sports, most athletic recruiting, especially at selective colleges, is athlete driven.

As long as I’m being disagreeable, I have to disagree with this, too:
As a parent of a kid who was both a NMF and a recruited athlete I can assure you that Princeton admissions values the coaches’ recruiting lists more than the NMF designation which, at a place like Princeton, is a “dime a dozen” accomplishment.

No control? Really now…

No. Not any significant boost. For the University of California, English as one’s secondary language is a tip. (Earns points.) For privates, what would be impressive, as I said on the earlier thread I cited, is several languages, and that would be a tip, not a hook. Please read the difference. :)

Thanks for all the responses guys!

In the end of the day don’t wrap yourself around what is a hook or a tip, because it should be more important that you find a match school. Hooks, even for athletes are not going to save you from academic probation.

The avg student will not have a HOOK.

Our DS was recruited by several Ivies, including Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and Penn. He also was recruited by UMich, UVA and UNCCH. A Hook for Stanford maybe a great golfer (Tiger and David Duvall both went there), but that would not be true for UMich. Liz Murray’s life was a Hook for her and universal to every college. It can be both and it depends on what the Hook is to make that call.

4 languages, and an International student on scholarship is a tip, not a hook. The scholarship is a huge tip because it is guaranteed money.
