Hi, I got deferred from Cornell for Dyson AEM and I am wondering if it's too late for me to take SAT2s to boost up my chances of getting into Cornell? The regular decision deadline is January 2nd and the SAT2s are on January 24th which means the results will come out sometime in February. I am also wondering what are my chances of getting into Cornell through regular decision

SAT score: 2000 (math:710, reading:650, writing:640)
GPA: 98.53 (weighted)
Rank: 15/885 (top 2%)
Race: Asian
Location: New York
ECs: remedy club (2 years), arista honors society
AP: total of 6 (global, ushistory, stat, bio, lit, calc AB)
Essays: I dont think I am in the right position to judge my own essays.. but I think theyre pretty good
Recommendations: I didnt read them so idk
Volunteering: a bunch of tutoring places and at some dental office
Awards: arista honors society award and a couple for math team ( I was on the math team for 4 years)

I would also like to submit another essay to Cornell telling them that Cornell is still my first choice but I don’t have any new accomplishments (joining a new club, retaken SATS, etc). Is it incorrect of me to send in an email just stating that Cornell remains as my first choice? Should I wait till I have something new to put into my application?

@fernweh You can certainly send them a letter reaffirming your interest, either by email or my regular mail. You don’t need additional accomplishments.

As for getting in, I wouldn’t give up hope, but just remember that less than 10% of those deferred from Cornell are accepted. Your stats look pretty strong, so probably a little bit better than 10%.

@mnm111 yes I’m aware of that but I think they would have just rejected me if they didn’t think I’m qualified; do you think taking SAT2s will boost up my chances slightly? I am looking into other schools though.

Do what you must to have peace of mind. I’m sure SAT II’s might help, but overall the final decision that Cornell gives you is absolute. If Cornell is your first choice, then go for it.

Why did you wait until the last minute to take your subject tests? Poor planning on your part. You don’t even know what you will get on the tests let alone if the scores will help you.
