Hi guys. I'm a student in my first year of community college. I've recently decided to commit myself to the environment and I'm considering restoration ecology as a career path because it's something I am absolutely passionate about. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions about classes, schools, and programs that would be beneficial. I was planning on transferring to a UC school after my two years here, but I'm open to ideas and suggestions if there are better schools out there. I'm also interested in getting my Master's in whatever would be most relevant and helpful as well as versatile and applicable.

I hope this helps. Use assist to plan what classes to take and talk to a counselor.

Assist is friend. Assist is life.

Find the major and make a little plan on what classes you need to take. Balance your major classes with some GE requirements. Talk with your professors in the major about any opportunities to do research or work, that will look really good on apps.

If you have College Search questions, you will do better on that forum as it gets more traffic.

Look at the programs at UCD and UCSC. Also there is a list of special programs here.

Worry about grad school later, like jr year, when you figure out what approach you want to take with your studies. You might try a number of universities to see if you can get some funding. One place to look at is University of Wisconsin Madison that has many pathways as seen in the link. My daughter is in grad school there and loves living there.

Thanks so much! Davis has really caught my eye. If I choose UCD, do you think I should apply to the school of agriculture and environmental sciences or biology? Which would be a better fit for what my interests are?

UCD is your best bet for anything environmentally oriented. The agriculture and environmental sciences sounds like a good match for you. Do you have a specific major in mind yet?

Probably either Evolution, Ecology and Biodiversity (Bio) or Ecological Management and Restoration (Ag&E).

@gabsmatags

I wouldn’t apply as Biology just because it’s a very selective major. Davis has its own Agricultural school who’s requirements aren’t as stiff as Biology, and since you plan on doing something related to the environment, choosing a major from Davis’ Ag school is your best bet. Good luck!

Thanks! Maybe I should do a more bio-oriented program in grad school if I choose Davis.
