What are my chances? - an international student

SAT: 1420 (Verbal 690, Math 730) Lamentable, I know…
SAT IIs: Writing 760, Math 1C 710, Chemistry 740
GPA: I’m an international student, hence different system
Rank: 8 of 230 (top 4%)
Other stats: TOEFL 283

Essays: Pretty good I thought, I wrote about summoning up my courage to approach a girl in a club. Heavy references to T.S. Eliot’s poem, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. I thought it was original and different, if not a bit fictitious.
Teacher Recs: Pretty good, my math teacher said I was one of the top 100 math students in the country.
Counselor Rec: Good (determined, intense, intelligent, humorous)
Hook (if any): I’m Chinese who grew up in South Africa, maybe Rochester is looking for students of diverse backgrounds???

State or Country: Johannesburg, South Africa
School Type: Large public school, voted best public school in the province in 1999
Ethnicity: Chinese/ South African
Gender: Male
major strength/weakness: Solid academics (many scholarship awards and academic honors), over 300 hours of community service, leadership position in theatrical productions

I think you have a very good shot, however since you are international, I don't know whether UR is needblind or not

I think you have a great shot!

Thanks a lot, guys...I needed the reassurance

Definitely in

I'm Pretty sure its need blind too.

I thought they didn't have any need-based aid for internationals - however, with your stats, I'd say you'll easily get one of those merit-based scholarships that they give. You don't need applications or anything, just have to sit and wait - although for one scholarship you actually had to have an interview if you were selected as a finalist. Or something. Can't remember.

Talking about aproaching a girl might hurt you, because all experts advise not writing that kind of essays. 'one of the top 100 math students in the country' and than scored 730 SAT I and 710 math1c i dont think so. How your teacher know that you are among 100 best math students?

Experts advise not writing a soppy essay dedicated to your gf/bf. I think mine was at least quite original and made references to some classical/contemporary literature; it also ended on a triumphant and positive note. So hopefully this wil help...

My teacher doesn't know and truth is I am not that good at maths, though I totally raped my final matriculation exams (different educational system).

I hope you have the money cause i think that UR is not very generous to intels

No you don't :P

The main reason why I've applied to UR is for a shot at the REMS program. And hopefully I can get scholarships.

Here's an interesting thread about UR on CC:

a) decisions are being made now, incl. for merit money, b) if you are international, you "must demonstrate ... ability to pay" to be admitted.

U.S. $ 31,010 per year with the merit scholarship for this person.
