What are my chances and how to prepare?

Hello, I am a Finance student at George Mason University, VA and I want to transfer to a top business school in the near year. I am planning to retake some classes I got B- in and probably bring my GPA up to 3.6

Business Schools I want to apply for:
UVA
NYU
UPenn Warton
Michigan Ross
William and Mary
Penn State

GPA: 3.4 Junior Finance major and Econ minor (starting senior year next fall)
High school GPA 3.5
Was captain of high school swimming
SAT 480 Reading, 530 Math, 490 Writing

Experience: Customer Service intern at Scottrade
Teller at Bank of America
I also publish business newsletters for my business co-ed fraternity Delta Sigma Pi and have been very active at professional and community service events.

Considering I have taken a lot of prerequisite classes such as entry accouting, finance, management, marketing etc.

My questions are:

How big are my chances to transfer into these schools if I choose to stay at GMU for another year and raise my GPA to 3.6? And hopefully have beast recommendations and essay

How should I start preparing for transfer process, besides establishing a relationship with my professors and studying hard?

NYU is a no because of the test scores which they seem to be hellbent on. UPenn is a no with a 3.6 as is U of M with about a 1% admit rate for transfers according to their website. If you have a 3.6 I want to say no for UVA as well but since you would be instate and I know VA has some wierd transfer programs I will just say I don’t think it’s likely. If you pull your GPA up to a 3.6 William and Mary is a maybe but with grade replacement the consider both the first and second grade as well as the fact that you would have to complete 2 years there to graduate. Penn State Smeal school doesn’t accept transfers with 3 or more semsters of coursework already completed.

UTPG - I’m a VA resident, and UVA’s articulation agreements (and all other VA schools) are only with CCs.

With all that in mind, I think you may want to look at some different schools. These are all pretty high reaches. I’m not sure how big a role SAT scores play after four years of undergrad, but if it’s more significant than I thought, you might consider retaking them. Top-ranked schools will be looking at scores in the 2000+ range.

I can retake my SATs I am no where in a hurry.

So my plan would be:

Ace my current classes and bring my GPA up 3.6 by next fall

Prepare now and retake the SAT in May

Start getting ready with recs and essays when fall begins

Apply in January

Am I missing anything else?

If I retake the SAT and get close to 20000 do you think that will be a big factor in their decision? I will really have to study my butt off for them because I am not a native speaker, so I want to know if it is worth the effort.

Thanks a bunch

Since you will be a senior next fall, most colleges require you to stay 2 years at their school. Off the top of my head, Penn/Wharton only accepts entering sophomore and junior transfers, so does NYU/Stern.

If you are okay with spending another 2-2.5 years at your transfer school, then you can still apply.

I suggest you stick where you are, get a high GPA, then go for a top notch MBA program.

About your stats:
SAT and GPA are not so hot. Compare it to other’s applying for transfer.
