What are my chances. Any help please.

My reach schools are

Stanford
Princeton
Brown
Vanderbilt
Johns Hopkins
University of Chicago

By the way, I also have safety schools.

I am a Caucasian female. I am from an extremely small, country town.

I am planning to apply in one of the sciences, but I'm still undecided as to which one. (I will decide after I take chemistry next year.)

My ACT score is a 28. (I was a freshman.) I am going to take the ACT again this year as a sophomore. I am expecting a 33++.

I have a 4.04 GPA, and I will have a 4.02 when I graduate. (If I earn all A's!)

I will be valedictorian or salutatorian. (My opponent and I are neck and neck.)

My school is extremely small, so we are not allowed to choose our classes. My school does not offer honors, AP classes, etc.
My freshman year is the only time we could take honors; it was only for a semester. There was a really hard math teacher, and my school separated those failing from those with a D or higher and called them honors. Am I going to have a problem applying to higher-tiered universities because of my lack of honors??? ( I'm really worried about it!)

I have played varsity soccer from 8th grade to 10th grade.

I am going to work at a local grocery store from 10th until I graduate. (I cannot do soccer practice and work.)

I will be volunteering in the summer. Will I have a problem because I did not volunteer until the end of my 10th grade year? ( I couldn't drive, and I didn't have a ride.)
Also, what would be a good place to volunteer?

Many of my teachers and I are on great terms, so my recommendations will be excellent.

I am still working on my essays. ( I am going to work on them, and I am going
to ask my English teacher to read them.) I will try to perfect these because I heard the essays can make or break an applicant.

Please give me any opinions. Also, I am so sorry I left anything out. Is there anything that I can do to increase my chances?

Decide your major. and then give international competitions related to your major.

To boost up your ECs , you can give international competitions such as google science fair , intel science fair, international chemistry olympiad, NASA space settlement contest , the imagine cup innovation competition and many others.

Thank you so much!! (:

If you are going to choose science stream especially physics and chemistry, then i can help you more than any one else, like which book to solve and when , and all that stuff.

S, P: reach
Brown, Chicago: mid-reach
Vandy, JHU: high match/low reach

This assumes you get >33 on the ACT.

Thank you guys so much! Also, every comment is appreciated!

Are there any other universities that I should include that would be a better match? (:

If you failed that math class, it is going to hurt. Did you retake the class? Is there any other explaination aside from the teacher? Definitely aim for all A’s from here on out if you want to show that that grade was an anomaly.

I would wait until Junior year to take the ACT again. More classes and maturity should help you raise your grade. Many of the reachy schools will require you to report ALL of your test scores, so I would hold off on that and be sure to study for it.

I think that you could be competitive if you manage to get 33+. Ivies would still be reaches (they are for everyone) though you’d have a better chance if you improved your ECs. Good luck! Chance back? :slight_smile: <a href=“Chance me for Vassar I'll chance back :) - Vassar College - College Confidential Forums”>Chance me for Vassar I'll chance back :) - Vassar College - College Confidential Forums;

Thank you all so much!

I will be volunteering at a local hospital also.

Bump!

IMO the best thing you could do for yourself is to find several very selective schools (just below the Ivy & Ivy-equivalent level) that you really like. Look at schools such as U of Rochester, Case Western Reserve, Bryn Mawr, Kenyon, etc. Many of these schools have amazing science departments. Visit some and see what you think. When you do your apps, concentrate on these, and then apply to your reaches as well.

To answer your specific question, each of the schools you mention is a reach for almost everyone. Some applicants with 36 ACTs get turned away.

with a 28 you won’t get into any of those universities. Aim for a 36. really that’s what your going to need! If you have a 4.0 GPA then keep it up, you will be in good shape! good luck!

Thank you! I will work on improving my ACT score and extracurriculars.
