What are my chances applying for elite boarding schools for my 10th grade year?

I am a nationally ranked epee fencer and play the piano for 8 years, flute for 5 years, and violin for 3 years. I am an active Girl Scout, with my bronze and silver awards along with a community service bar (100+ hours of community service). I am a straight high A student who takes all advanced courses. I am enrolled in a gifted and talented education program. I was historian of National Junior Honors Society at my school. I also was on a Math and Science team that took 1st place at state. (Texas, 4A) I also was on a Future City (engineering competition) that took 2nd place at region, winning $750 for my school. However, I have not taking the SSAT yet, but I think I should score well because I recieved state recognition for my SAT scores when I took it in 7th grade. (showing my ablitity to perform well on tests) But I am still worried about whether I will be accepted or not...

There is no need to worry… you have a perfectly good chance. You have straight A’s which means that you will probably get good reqs, your state recognition for the Sat seems like something that foreshadows a good ssat test score so that’s also good. Your ecs look very good… you have some arts, academics, and athletics. You honestly have no reason to worry because you have everything they’re looking for. I, unfortunately, am not in a talented and gifted program, nor have I gotten straight A’s this past year… so you have a better chance then me but I’m applying next year and for 11th grade so that doesn’t really matter to you. Work hard on your essay, do well in your interview, show them why they should have you there and you will be fine.

A Good chance , especially if the school you apply to has a fencing team.

i would say definitely a good chance. where are u looking if u dont mind me asking?

I am looking for sure at applying to Exeter, Andover, and SPS due to their large FA program. I am currently searching for some safety schools, however, if I do not recieve FA I will not be able to attend.

Also, does anyone know of a school with a strong fencing program? I was hoping I might be able to get a scholarship for fencing to help out with costs. Please let me know.

No school really offers athletic scholarships. With your credentials if those schools feel you need full FA they will give it to you. They are very generous, if you get in, you will most likely get the money if you need it. So I wouldn’t worry about that. Just write good essays and have a good interview and you’re set.

oh. I didn’t realize that. I am new to the whole boarding school process. Plus, my parents aren’t that supportive. Which is why it is really important I recieve FA.

earthlygirl - FA is given based on a family’s lack of ABILITY to pay not on willingness.

I understand that. My family is not that well off, and if I don’t recieve any FA my parents will not allow me to go.

And I have to pay all my application fees. They won’t even CONSIDER letting me go unless I recieve FA.

please don’t apply to exeter because then there will be one less spot for me :D

overall you have an excellent chance of getting in. you just have to do well on the essays and interviews because those are really the only “personal” piece to your application.

The best fencing program is at The Masters School. I hear there are also fencing programs at Lawrenceville and Cambridge School of Weston, but that these are not as competitive as the one at Masters. Many boarding schools do not offer fencing.

I checked the website of Cambridge School of Weston, and they don’t seem to offer fencing. They might have a few years ago.

Thanks Burb Parent.
I will look at The Masters School. I know that Exeter has a small fencing program. SPS and Andover claim to have a fencing program, but I cannot find any info on their website. I will ask when I tour the schools.

Um. You have about 500% more things than I did, plus the recognition for it, and I got in as a 10th grader with FA. So. No worries. Good luck!

I know, Andover at least, has a fencing program. With program defined loosely. It’s a noncompetitive sport that enrolls about 20ish people in the fall and spring when it runs. They practice with three weapons at different times and it’s my understanding that people enrolled in fencing as a sport can switch between them freely to gain exposure or can stick to one to hone skills. The majority of the people in the program are novices though I know there are at least two nationally ranked fencers among them. Andover has also been pretty understanding if you need to leave campus to go to a competition, so long as it’s infrequent.

The fencing school to look at is Lawrenceville in New Jersey.
