What are my chances at Brown, Cornell, Berkeley, JHU, & Amherst?

College GPA: 4.0 (2 years at community college); 4.0 with 5 credits at the University of Washington

High school GPA: (my downfall) around a 2.6. I just never cared about learning until I grew up a little. Now I go overboard and am not satisfied until I get all of the points, even the little extra points. Plus, I always skipped classes in HS. =(

SATs/ACTs: Never taken the SATs/ACTs and am hoping to get it waived since Brown offers that (but it might hurt my chances). But the other colleges don't require that for transfers.

Clubs: Circle K International (1st position: Secretary, 2nd position: Treasurer, current position: Vice President of Service), Rotaract (Treasurer), Phi Theta Kappa (Vice President of Scholarship), UNICEF (treasurer), Philosophy club (not really involved in this, though. Just attend meetings once in a while)

Volunteer: Assistant living home for 4 hours/week during the summer. Planning on 2 hours/week during school time.

Work experience: Childcare provider, Peer-to-Peer mentor, Nanny for a short period of time

Brown, Cornell, Berkeley, John Hopkins University, & Amherst are definitely my reaches. I'm doubting that I could get into those colleges, but I'll definitely try. =) My dream college is Brown.

My safeties are University of Washington and Western Washington, but I don't see myself being happy there.

I'm from a community college, too. Would that hurt my chances? Thank you.

Oh, and I forgot to add that I was involved in Amnesty International during senior year of HS.

johns hopkins reaches?

dream on.

I think you have a good shot. You’ve shown growth and maturity since high school, so I don’t think your HS GPA will be your downfall.

I think your academics are fine. Now it’s just a matter of getting everything else (essays, recs, ECs) right… and of course luck. :)

Agreed with MagiTF. When it comes to transferring, your chances can only really be thought of in terms of competitive or noncompetitive. And the information everyone gives us in these chance threads (GPA/HS Work/ECs, etc) won’t tell the whole story of the applicant. Recs and Essays will matter immensely in the transferring process (especially for these schools, where the slightest advantage you have over the other 4.0s will help) as well as the reason for transferring (though you go to CC, so that won’t exactly factor in). These are things we won’t ever see.

So, do I think you are competitive for these schools? Yes. But keep in mind, a good amount of the applicants are competitive. You’ve done your job with ECs and GPA. Now it’s time to convince the school you’re right for them and vice versa.

to the OP, my h.s. gpa is around yours as well. I’m currently in a 4-year college working really hard to transfer to many of the schools you are applying to as well. Take any form of criticism (unless its constructive) with a grain of salt. They aren’t admissions officers so they won’t know. Just do the best you can and let time take care of everything else.

cornell and berkeley are i think high matches. they’re acceptance rate for transfers is around 20-30 percent, and assuming you have that 4.0 there’s no reason you shouldn’t be getting in, unless of course you’re seeking admissions to a super impacted major(and if you are you better have all your general eds and pre requisites doen).

brown i think for transfers has an admit rate of like less than 8 percent for transfers, so that’ll definitely be super reach.

amherst borders the10-20 percent acceptance rate, i think you have a decent shot.

i dont know anything about jhu.

If you apply to all schools you have listed, I see you getting into at least one of them
