Several AP Courses:
AP World Hist (2) (I was a noob my sophomore year)
APUSH (4)
AP Lang (3)
AP Art Hist (4)
AP Calc AB (4)

Potential AP courses (senior year):
AP Psych
AP Calc BC
AP Lit
AP Chem

By the way I have taken Honors Physics (my school doesn't have AP Physics) and regular chemistry. I am going to take AP chemistry. I know some engineering schools require you to take calculus, physics, and chemistry.

I don't really have much extracurriculars and volunteer hours. Will this affect me?

Your SAT is low for SLO and ME is one of the most competitive majors. See the attached link for 2013 admission profile to see how you stack up: <a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions;
Based upon your SAT, I would say Low Reach. Retake and aim for a 2000+

EC’s and volunteer hours account for only about 10% in your application.

@TheIntegration: The SAT 1 listed is the average score for Math and Critical Reading which was 1388 last year. Your CSU GPA is great but calculate using your Freshman grades since SLO uses Freshman grades also. I do not think SLO will Super score the SAT but will take the best scores in 1 sitting. Like I state above, they also use a bonus point system, so if you have more than 4 years of Math/Science/English, 4 years of a language and 2 years of Fine Art classes you will get bonus points. Majority of the points are for Math and Science.

Just an FYI: This year my younger son had 5 friends apply for ME at SLO. All had over 4.0 GPA’s and SAT scores above 2000. Only 1 got accepted but decided on UCLA. The other 4 that were denied will be attending: 1 (UCLA), 1 (UCB), 2 (UCSB). Very tough this year. Do your best, apply and hope you are accepted. Good Luck.

@Gumbymom Hello. I was looking at the bonus points for Cal Poly, and I was wondering what “advance math” means? Do they mean AP courses such as calculus? Because if that is that is the case, I would acquire 500 bonus points. I would also get 200 bonus points for lab sciences as well. Do these have any affect on my admission, or is this what most applicants already have when applying to SLO?

Yes, you will receive bonus points for calculus. Cal Poly SLO requires 4 semesters of algebra and 2 semesters of geometry. They desire (and this is where the bonus points come in) 4 semesters of advanced math (math beyond geometry/algebra).

I think (and this is just my opinion) most of the high academic students applying receive most but not all of the academic points. My son (chemistry major) had all of the “desired” academic semesters except 10 semesters of English.

Hello @Gumbymom I did calculate my CSU GPA by using freshmen grades as well. It came out to be 4.00 exactly. Also I was wondering what my chances will be now? I just took a practice SAT and scored a 700 M and 600 CR (composite 1300). I will receive 500 points due to the advanced math classes (do they have to be taken prior senior year?) and 200 points for lab sciences. I’m also a first generation student, and my parents did not receive a high school diploma (I heard these have factors into admission?). Of course, this is all hypothetical until I receive my real scores. Do my prospects look any better for mechanical or electrical engineering?

@TheIntegration Your combined practice test score is still a little below the average SAT score for SLO MechE majors as stated by Gumbymom above. Your GPA is decent although 4.0+ for SLO would be more competitive. First generation is considered but not a determining factor towards your admissions. Also, you should choose majors based off your interest rather than which one can get into.

I’ll just say California colleges are getting more competitive and your math score should be 700+ for engineering. Also, try ACT.

5224 seems pretty high for the eligibility are you sure you did it correctly?
No, SLO does not superscore.
SAT I refers to the SAT while SAT II refers to subject tests. SLO does not require subject tests.

@Fysiks Thanks for your input! I’m studying for the SAT right now (CR) to raise that up. I’m also taking subject tests for UCs (Math II and Physics), and I was wondering if SLO will even look at them if I sent them? Oh, by the way, I understand it sounds like I’m trying to get into an “easier major” but I’m not. I’m really interested in mechanical and electrical engineering; I would love to do them both if I can. How about CPP?

Repost when you have your final SAT score. @TheIntegration, CPP would be a match. Regarding your chances for SLO, it will also depend upon the applicant pool and their GPA and scores. You see the average rising every year. Just make sure you have several backup schools…
You can self report your subject tests on the application but do not waste the money to send in the official reports since SLO will not look at them. Good Luck

@Gumbymom so unfortunately my scores are immutable. I got the same scores as last time, and I feel like crap. So I know I don’t have a chance at SLO for ME, but what about Pomona?

SAT: 1160/1600
Eligibilty Index 5090
CSU GPA: 4.15 (10th-11th)

and my other stats are on the first page.

Also chance me at UCI, UCR, UCSD? I probably don’t have a chance at SD either, huh?

You’re the only person that I really respect your judgement because of your knowledge about the Cal Polys. Thank you again.
