What are my chances at Carleton College

Carleton is really the only school I wanna go to. I'm going to apply to 4 schools next year. Carleton, Princeton, Yale, and UNLV. I'm applying to Princeton and Yale because if I don't, i'll regret it. I really have no interest in attending the schools, I'm just curious as to whether or not I'd get accepted. I'll always wonder if I don't apply but I'm pretty sure I won't get accepted. UNLV is my safety school choice because I live in Las Vegas. So this leaves Carleton as the only college I want to go to.

My stats:
-3.76 GPA unweighted
-1920 SAT (630 reading, 710 math, 580 reading)
-31 ACT
-AP World History score: 3
-AP chemistry and AP US history scores are pending
-Hispanic (I'm guessing that will increase my chances)
-Applying for financial aid (I'm guessing that will decrease my chances)
-I plan on applying for early admission

EC activities:
-Forensics
-Jazz Band
-Internship at Nevada Cancer institute

And also, there's only one SAT test between now and the early admission deadline. Should I take the SAT II or should I increase my SAT I scores?

Scary. We almost have the same stats.

What makes you interested in Carleton from Nevada?

It’s pretty much exactly what I want. i read about it in a book. Fiske’s college guide 2009 or something like that. It has a small student population, it’s in a nice small town, the teachers WANT to help students from what I heard, the students aren’t competitive, the trimester system gives me a month and a half off in winter. It’s just the perfect school. I’d apply elsewhere but I can’t really afford anywhere else. I wanna go to med school and I don’t really wanna take loans for undergrad school.

What do you mean you can’t afford anywhere else? It’s a private liberal arts college, it is going to cost some coin.

according to the website, they pay for whatever I can’t afford through grants.

So does anyone know what my chances are?

It’s more about fit than anything. The worst case scenario is not you getting rejected, but getting accepted with a terrible financial aid package and finding out it’s not the place you thought it was. You say they have good aid policies, but in reality it costs $50K/yr to go there. It might be half that depending on your financial situation, but I can’t see you getting a full ride.

Normally I wouldn’t recommend this, but I think you almost have to visit carleton in January to appreciate how cold it can get. It’s not vegas. I’d say you have decent chances, probably a mid reach. Applying ed will obviously boost your chances, and your location helps you.

Just reading about it in a magazine or on cc won’t cut it though. No matter how great you think it is, perceptions change.

they can’t, and will not pay for your entire schooling through grants. yes, some of it will be through grants, but unless you are extremely destitute, it will be a combination of loans, grants, and work study.

You’re right Poseidenj and I was unclear. If accepted, Carleton will give me loans that i qualify for and employment. They’ll also find scholarships i qualify for and things like that. But after all of their loans, scholarships, and employment add up and everything FAFSA says my parents can pay, anything I still can’t afford will be paid through grants by Carleton. i realize that I’m going to have to contribute and my parents are going to have to contribute and that they’re going to give me some loans but most of the financial aid, according to their website, will be from grants. I’m well aware I won’t get a full ride and i apologize for being unclear about that.

Toshimelonhead: I plan on visiting the campus in Late september/early october. Although I can’t say I understand how cold it will get, I do understand it is extremely cold. Being from Vegas, the coldest it has gotten here has probably been 20 or so degrees.

You say I’m a mid-reach. What should I do to improve that. I plan on starting a club at my school next year so that, i’m sure, will look good. And should I take the SAT II or increase my SAT I score?
