What are my chances at Cornell, Michigan...

Hi,
I'm male and I'm Asian. I just wanna know if I have a chance of getting into any of the following schools:

Michigan
Cornell
Washington University in St. Louis
University of Pennsylvania
Arizona State University
University of Virginia

My high school has no ranking system. It's a school for gifted students which requires incoming students to take take a variety of tests to qualify. I've taken all honors and AP courses with the exception of Health and Driver's Ed.

GPA: 3.98 unweighted (received a B in freshmen biology)
SAT I: 1920 (M-650, CR-640, W-630) will retake definitely
SAT II: US History-750 (planning on taking two more)
AP: US History-4
World History-5
English Comp-3
Calculus- 2 (teacher's fault, I swear)
AP courses taken: Computer Science

Very nice stats...
Michigan- Accepted
Cornell- Should be accepted
Washington University in St. Louis- Accepted
University of Pennsylvania- They will most certainly give you a lottery ticket...
Arizona State University- Accepted w/ scholarship
University of Virginia- Accepted

Im sure that you will get into a great school but that SAT is still gonna hurt you. Probably in at most of those.

In at Cornell and WashU with a below 1300? Ummmm, what am I missing?

Which state do you live in? I have almost identical stats, and I've been told that UVA is a far reach for me (I live in PA). Also, I've been told I have almost no shot at Cornell. Maybe I'm missing something, but Cornell would be a reach, so would UVA (if you're out-of-state).

cornell- huge reach
uva- huge reach
university of penn- huge reach
wash u- reach
michigan- match/reach
arizona state university- safety

If you can get the SATs up to around 1400 then you'd be in good shape for all of them. otherwise, you have too many reaches and need more good matches.

chocolateluvr88:

Do you know how heavily Penn, UVA, and Cornell weigh the writing section? I'm hoping that if I bring my SAT scores (between reading and math) into the 1400's, I have a shot at those. However, if I have a writing score in the 600's, I think it'll just drag me down. Any thoughts? Thanks.

scores too low, ivies and other tough schools seem out of reach.

you have a long list of EC's, but you seem to have very little leadership. That should become one of your main priorities, second to raising those SAT scores.

ur in at michigan and asu. perhaps cornell, they dont seem to care about numbers too much. everywhere else is gonna b tough

Live in AZ

Actually, Cornell very much does carea bout numbers and therefore, your SATs scores are going to make it difficult to get in...if you were one or two in your class you would have a very substantial shot, but its a real reach for you with those scores

Cornell is a bit more stats driven than the rest of the top 10 schools if you apply to engineering (and maybe even if you apply to the other colleges)

which will hurt you, not help you

You are in at AZ atleast, raise the scores

Which major is easiest to get accepted into Cornell? How difficult is it to transfer from one college to another within Cornell? Is there a minimum amount of time you need to stay in a particular college before transfering into another?
I hear Penn's school or nursing is relatively easy to get into. Is it difficult to switch among Penn's colleges (excluding Wharton, of course!)?

your SATs stink for UMich, bring em up baby!

or should i say ur SATs?

yes..it is difficult to switch you have to re-apply and you have to have an interview for nursing, they'll sniff insincerity

The only weaknesses I see are your low SAT scores and scattered list of EC's. Your current SAT score of 1290 is going to hurt you a lot. Raising your SAT M+CR score to close to a 1400 should be your first priority. Additionally, in my opinion, it looks you joined clubs for resume-padding since there's not too much consistency in your EC's. UPenn is definitely a long-shot but I think you've got reasonable chances everywhere else if you manage to raise your SAT scores. They're really weighing you down, buddy.

KRabble, the selectivity of admissions vary between college to college in Cornell. Some schools are slightly easier to get into than others. I think the Cornell board has the admissions statistics of each college. Might want to check that out. Oh, both Cornell and UPenn are aware of those who want to apply to a particular college only to transfer to another one. You'll only be screwing yourself, in my opinion.

So its a school for gifted students
What would you say is the average SAT score at such a school?

Remember, colleges don't just look at your SAT score, but the school's average score in comparsion to yours, socio-economica background, etc.

No offense, but a 1920 seems sorta low for a "gifted" student

UVA and Penn are reaches...everything else should be OK.
