I have been told that I have really strong essays, and I got good recommendation letters. I'd be going for a biology major. I know my standardized test scores aren't that great but do I still have a shot?

What are the SAT Subscores? What are your AP scores? Have you taken any SAT subject Tests? What were your scores on them?

Well a lot of the AP classes are ones that I am taking this year as a senior, but I got a 4 on Lang and 3 on US. My school doesn’t offer many AP classes to juniors. I took Biology and got a 620 and Math I and got a 630.

I got a 720 on Critical Reading and a 710 on Math and 580 on Writing (I think my essay is bringing me down on that one). I’m retaking them though.

I will be honest with you, your unweighted and weighted GPA are quite impressive. However, rigor seems lacking. You will be up against a lot of kids who would have taken 4/5 AP classes and scored at least three 5s in junior year. These kids are also going to have a couple of SAT Subject Tests in the 700+ range too. You could find it academically, hard to compete against these type of kids, especially if they are hooked. So, I am not saying do not apply, but realize JHU is going to be a reach for you and why. It is a top school and not easy to get in for anyone. I would focus on trying to get 700+ on some SAT subject tests before retaking SAT Reasoning.

That makes perfect sense, thank you so much! Will my chances be any better since I’m applying early decision?

definately ED is always increases you chances . Most of the time

Also, are there any other schools you would recommend I look at?

Take a look at top 50 private schools such as, Case Western or University of Miami. Also, look at your state flagship. In addition, don’t forget to look at what your parents can afford and then see who will give you financial aid. For example, we are in TX and my son is looking at some top schools but also UT Dallas and U of Houston because they are known to give good scholarships to Texans. You should be able to find similar schools in your own area. Most of them have honors colleges for good students, to challenge you and professors who will work with you closely. Good luck
