What are my chances at NYU?

I have just recently been looking at NYU and have fallen in love with it. The problem is, my freshman year grades have not been fantastic, nor was the first semester of my sophomore year. I'm a junior this year and am in the full IB program.

Stats:

Freshman year: A, A, B, B, B, B, B (2 honors) so my UW GPA was : 3.18, and weighted was about 3.56

Sophomore year: A, A, A, A, A, B, B, B, B (3 honors, took 2 classes over the summer to get ahead so I could do the IB program.

This year (so far): A, A, A, A, B, B, B (all IB classes, weighted.)

As of now, my class rank is 115/360, which is not very good, I know. It's because of my freshman year. But after this year, it should be somewhere around 75/360, so top 25%. I go to a very competitive school.

I'm taking the SAT and ACT in February. I've been taking practice portions online and have been doing very well. What would I need to get for NYU?

Caucasian (male)
Resident of Virginia

I've played varsity tennis every year of high school, and might possibly get captain this year. (would that make much of a difference)?

Robotics team, Math team, Chess team, and Honor Council (Junior and Senior year).

I'm in the IB program.

I play piano in concerts and recitals. Have been playing all through high school. Should I mention this anywhere on my resume?

I will be joining the junior rescue squad this summer. (riding around in the ambulance)

I attended a National Leadership Camp last summer for Medicine and Healthcare.

I'll be taking AP Calc and AP Computer Science this summer and the grades will be on my transcript (probably A's, online classes aren't very challenging grade-wise.)

So what are my chances? I want to go into medicine, so I think my summer camp and rescue squad will outline that. Any advice on what I should write for my essay?

If you have read all of this, thank you SO much. I really appreciate it. Also, if there are any other good schools that you think I'd have a chance at, I'd love to hear. Chance at UVa in-state?

NYU has 2 early decisions, so I'm planning on applying for both. Will that increase my chances of getting accepted regular decision?

I’m applying for the school of Math and Science.

I’m taking 3 sciences next year as well. AP Physics, IB Bio (year 2), and IB Chemistry

First thing where NYU os concerned–can you afford it? You will not be at the top of their pool, so significant aid is highly unlikely.

That said, if you get high SAT scores (2100 plus) you’ll have a real shot.

Yes I can afford it. I’m planning on taking the ACT though. I’ve been taking practice tests and thought it was very easy, so I think I’ll do well on that. A 2100 on the SAT is about a 31 on the ACT, correct?

What do you think my chances are?

As of now, my UW GPA from freshman and sophomore year is:

3.5 UW
3.85 W

If my grades stay the same this year, I’ll have

3.55 UW
4.05 W

This GPA is adequate, but I think since they’ll see the drastic improvement each year as my classes became even harder will be a huge help. Thoughts?

You’ll probably get in and since you can pay the $55k+ per year to go there, you’ll likely be able to go.

Good luck…but also find some safeties.

The tuition is 38,000$ per year, correct? That’s what mostly all of the websites have said.

Any advice anyone?

Bump bump bump

Do I have a chance? High chance?

Do you think I’ll get in?

Not that high chance I mean you are pretty average considering the grades, if not below the mean for NYU, no offense.

What are your subjects and scores for IB subjects, thats quite important. What major you apply to?

Junior year schedule:

IB HL Biology
IB HL History of the Americas
IB HL English
IB TOK
Precalculus
Spanish 4
Pre-IB Chemistry

This summer:

AP Calculus
AP Computer Science

Next Year:

IB HL Biology (year 2)
IB HL History of the Americas (year 2)
IB HL English (year 2)
IB Math Studies
IB Spanish A
IB TOK
AP Physics

I’m planning on majoring in Biochemistry, as I want to go to medical school. What grades would I need to get this year? And if I get above a 33 on the ACT (my average so far from practice tests), would I have a solid shot? What should I write for my letter?

Thoughts? What should I shoot for SAT-wise? Application essay?

I can’t decide to write about for my essay. Also, should I explain why my freshman year grades were so poor? I was thinking about saying something like, “failure is the only path to success”. Or is that too cliche?

You’ll probably get in and since you can pay the $55k+ per year to go there,

*The tuition is 38,000$ per year, correct? That’s what mostly all of the websites have said. *

Do you plan on living on the grass and subsisting on air???

NYU’s Cost of Attendance for the CURRENT school year is…

Tuition and fees:… $40,082
Room and board:… $13,507

Books and supplies:… $1000

About…$55,000 And… estimate the costs will rise by about 3-5% for each year. And, you need to add transportation costs and personal expenses (about another $3k)

My dad makes about 160,000$ a year, and he is the one paying for my college. He also has about 60,000$ in a college fund. Do you think that he could afford it?

Math Studies is extremely weak programme, take Maths HL in order to stay competetive

1) You can only apply EITHER Early Decision I, Early Decision II, or Regular Decision. If you get rejected EDI, you cannot apply EDII. If you apply EDII and get rejected, you cannot apply RD. If you get apply EDI and get rejected, you cannot apply RD.

2) NYU, in total, will cost about $60,000. Your college fund will pay for only one year. Also, with your dad’s income you cannot expect a lot of financial aid as NYU financial aid is extremely bad at NYU.

3) You say you want to go into medicine. That means you will be paying for med school after undergrad, which is extremely expensive. Your current financial situation, should you go to NYU, would most likely result in debt and therefore you should really take a look at whether you want to go to such an expensive school for undergrad.

4) mom2collegekids is correct about the cost. My parents are expecting to pay $65,000 for me to go to NYU next year. Not to be rude, but my dad’s income is greater than your dad’s and he still has to supplement the out-of-pocket money with federal Stafford loans. Again, reconsider NYU.

5) I can’t really give you a chance right now because you don’t have SAT/ACT scores, but if you are applying to CAS (Arts and Sciences - not Math and Sciences) your GPA is fine, and make sure you have an SAT of around ~2150.

Thank you for the input, Justspice. Now that it’s clear that I’ll most likely get in, what are my options for payment?

I just talked to my dad, and when he said 160,000, he wasn’t including his bonus, which is around 100,000. So he makes about 260,000 a year.

I obviously won’t be at the top of the applicant pool, so it would be hard to get good financial aid. What are my other options? I don’t want to leave for medical school with a 100,000$ debt :P
