What are my chances at NYU?

OH, well if he includes his bonus, then he can pay without loans, as his income will be roughly around my dad’s. However, paying out of pocket with that income WILL strain finances for other things like the mortgage, living expenses etc., so you’ll probably want to take out some loans. Not huge loans, mind you.

Also, I don’t think you’re EASILY in… as of right now the school is sitting in your reach but not solidly in your reach. Bust your butt this year, earn really good grades (like a 4.0 unweighted), and you’ll find yourself with a real shot to get in. Like I said earlier, make sure you get an SAT around 2150.

Other options are to go for schools with good merit aid and historically good placement for med schools, or your state school. I personally would advise those who are premeds to go to their state school, because as you know medical school is very, very expensive.

I think there’s a reasonable chance you’ll be accepted, so you should have a serious financial discussion with your dad. Tell him it will cost around $60k per year, so if you draw $15k per year from the college fund that leaves about $45k per year for four years, plus med school after that. Ask him he would be willing and able to fund that out of his income. If he says no, calculate the amount of debt you’d be facing and ask yourself if it would be worth it to you. If he says yes, then apply ED to boost your admission chances.

Good luck.

So you think it’d be a better idea to go to a state school? What do you think my chances are at UVa? I’m a resident of Virginia. BTW, thank you for the responses!

*My dad makes about 160,000$ a year, and he is the one paying for my college. He also has about 60,000$ in a college fund. Do you think that he could afford it? *

*I just talked to my dad, and when he said 160,000, he wasn’t including his bonus, which is around 100,000. So he makes about 260,000 a year.

I obviously won’t be at the top of the applicant pool, so it would be hard to get good financial aid. What are my other options? I don’t want to leave for medical school with a 100,000$ debt :stuck_out_tongue: *

Financial aid is based on NEED (and NYU gives lousy need-based aid). Not only that, but your dad’s income is too high for any aid.

Merit is based on stats…and NYU only gives merit to the TOP applicants.

So, you need to talk to your dad about costs. We have no idea if he will think $55k-60k+ per year is too much or not.

Anyway…since you want to go to med school, going to NYU is not necessary for undergrad. I would talk to my dad about a strategy. I would find out if he would pay/help pay for med school if you go to an undergrad that isn’t that expensive.

Look at it this way…Med schools can cost between $200k-$350k for the four years. Do you think your dad is going to spend $220k on undergrad PLUS med school costs???

You live in VA, you have excellent and cheaper options there. Also, if your stats are high enough, you could get merit at some schools.

*I personally would advise those who are premeds to go to their state school, because as you know medical school is very, very expensive. *

I agree.

Thank you. I was getting ahead of myself with the whole undergrad situation. I could always go to medical school in New York. Last question: based on my stats as of now, what would you say my chances at the University of Virginia are? I’m a resident. Considering I maintain about a 32 on my ACT.
